  about 3 years ago I saw an english gangster-movie. I don't exactly remember what it was about, bt I do remember that the setting was realy cool. Seventies style. I think it was about a guy who tried to climb the ladder of hierarchy in his gang. I think it came out in 1998 (?). It was a pretty alternative movie.
  does anyone have a clue what movie that could be?

  it wasn't lock, stock. It wasn't a big, popular film or anything, that's what makes it so hard to find it...
  I should probably check the archives of filmfestivals or something...

  i think the film you are looking for is zelma madak's The God Of Badminton, starring Michael Errol, Steven Donaldson and Tina Crawford. it was made in 2000, and it sounds just like what you were rabbitting on about. gangster flick,1970's, ladders, hierarchy, bloke, that sort of thing, music by robert duigan. then again i might be totally wrong....but that's what i reckon anyway. i'll probably be proven right to, cos i often am, you see it runs in the family ?? incidentally, i get £55,000 a year, ACE eh??

  Then you should take a look at 'funny games' It's from austria. No gangsta-movie, but you'll be sitting in your fauteuil with your ass-cheeks squeezed together for 2 hours, it's that thrilling
