My GF is going to Paris for the fall (4 months). She is wondering about the mobile phone situation there.
She has a t-mobile Sony T-300
http://www.t-mobile.com/products…
Now can she do something there to get that phone to work there? IS it cheaper to get a new phone? How much will she have to spend for the plan? Her limit is around $50 a month? Are there only year contracts like in the states?Would a land line be cheaper? (considering she will be making at least 3 calls to the US a week)
BTW hows the WIFI situation there? She also wants free internet.

tell her to buy a pay-as-you-go sim card

for as far as i know T-Mobile is all over Europe.. i just got myself an account with them..
why not ask 'em?
btw... she could always call me:

So wait she can buy a pay as you go sim card there? The same type of sim card in that T-300?
What are the rates like for the pay-as-you-go plans?specifically for international calls?
- sexypixel0
you'll pay around 20-30 euros for a pay as you go sim card, then the rates vary but arent cheap. shes better off just having it for incoming calls and local off peak calls.

International calls will probably cost insane amounts of money. The pre-paid sim cards usually cost alot more to use than the ordinary ones.

err:
the phone will work in europe (since its a triband phone) but only on the T-Mobile network (or whateffer else t-mobile will let you connect to)
if you want to use different sim card, you would have to "unlock" the phone.

Ok researched t-mobile. its 99cents a min.! incomming and outgoing. This is pretty expensive.
Now if she gets that Pay-as-you-go sim card from another company. It won't work in her t-mobile phone because its not "unlocked"?
99 cents a min. for t-mobile?
or a new phone from a company like Orange and the prepaid rates? What is going to be cheaper grrrr.
- sexypixel0
i can believe companys are still aloud to lock up phones like that. its bullshit
- huphtur0
sexypix: thats why i buy phones thru ebay. they are cheaper, unlocked and i dont have to resign a contract (that should be banned!)

hi there.. well lots of question.. i'll try to help you as i can :
now we have prepaid cards as well, not only subscriptions. Yes contratcs are yearly. a land libne is about 15 euros a month plus communications but you have to give lots of papers etc..
i'll say either you get a prepaid card and that's all right for your 2/3 calls a weeek and everyone can join u.. (not 50 minutes calls ... ;) or u have a cellular in the US with a contract that alllows u to call from France and be called for a reasonable rate.
The land line would be the cheapest but hard to get.
Now you have Phone shops (lots and lots) in Paris that allow u to call anywhere for real cheap.. but you won't receive any call..
Wifi ?.. here .. hmmm :) is that a joke ?
no wifi man.. we're in France : that's only 2 years we have adsl and about 6 months it's big and spread everywhere.. we live in the past ...hope it will help

If money is the issue, it's your best bet... not being smart, just realistic.
