Slight rant but why/how in the name of fuck did Shape of Water win even single award? Directing was dire and dull, set design was yawn. Acting apart from (stella Michael Shannon and Richard Jenkins) was uneventful.
Above all the writing was dribble, it was pure stereotyping, women this, gay people are this, white man is this, black man that.
I was able to predict the entire film from the first opening minutes...

These awards should have gone to better films. It was a bad rip off of Amélie.

    • ffs it's hollywood - what the hell do you expect?hans_glib
    • ^ better! I know I know. Been in film VFX for way to long and still I have hope!mugwart
    • my high school buddy did the production design on thatGnash
    • shame on him then ;-)mugwart
    • I haven't seen it yet -- was it that bad?Gnash
    • the production company (not the technicians) made a mediocre film at best. Cause it was PC it was applauded not questionedmugwart
    • hm, I didn't realize that there was any PC buzz about it.Gnash
    • nor I. I went in really looking forward to this (love monster/ strange films) but through the first 5 mins I know every event film. Only one scene surprise me.mugwart
    • It’s a great film. Don’t listen to this one angry rant.monospaced
    • VFX on the creature was incredible.mugwart
    • +1 mono
del Toro’s work was brilliant & deserved- though I wish he gave cred to the Islamis poet’s quote used @ the end. But I digress.

    • PC? It's a fairy tale ffs. The entire film hangs on her deafness. GdT brings beauty to the most banal, every-day, things.face_melter
    • The acting was incredibly powerful, and the script was original. Any parts that seemed derivative were absolutely intentional and necessary for the story.monospaced
    • Visually and thematically rich, it was so much more than a fairytale. It was a story of love, loss and regret. It stuck with me more than most films.monospaced
    • @notype, I don’t remember the quote but I’m sure he was credited in the credits at leastmonospaced
    • really not angry at all.
Just my opinion. Acting was great on the two actors I mentioned. Rest really was obvious and very very fake.

    • @face, I've studied fairy fales and they are anything but PC. What we have had in the past 100 years are not "real" fairy tales.mugwart
    • Also there was no reasoning in the film. Almost no reason to fall in love. (I'm actually really happy as we won for 2049.)mugwart
    • I'm not the only one https://www.telegrap…mugwart
    • with all due respect, if you don't understand why they fell in love, then you pretty much missed the entire point of the movie, to its coremonospaced
    • which is no surprise why you didn't like it ... you failed to understand it entirelymonospaced
    • No No I get it was a love story and that they were to be together. I'm 110% down with that. It was the direction "engine" (if you will) that failed memugwart
    • It wasn't organic. Say Ameile, you fell for the characters it was organic. This film was you being told you had to feel in a certain way. They used PC plot ...mugwart
    • traps/devices for you to manipulate you in a certain way.mugwart
    • Its my grip with modern films. Your conducted as much as the film extras.
Take Shawshank Redemption, you felt the characters, you felt their emotions.
      mugwart
    • Here you have a someone with an egg and a portable music player for like 1 minute.mugwart
    • If I had to review this in a sentence, "Its a film that is pieced together without heart from films that do have a lot of heart"mugwart
    • well, it turns out a lot of people connected with the characters in The Shape of Water, felt them, felt their emotions ... I sure didmonospaced
    • ;-) Not a complete fail then ;-)mugwart
    • lol ... it was all #winning ;)monospaced
    • it played up stereotypes of an implied era all around it's about being different and finding love... if you can't relate, well...ben_
