Ever wonder what all the 'smoke' is in the last few seconds of count down? It's water. For sound suppression. "A sound suppression system was installed on the pads and the mobile launcher platform to protect the orbiter and its payloads from being damaged by acoustical energy reflected from the platform during liftoff."

Truely amazing all the engineering solutions that have been made over the years since 1903 when The Wright brothers made their first flight.
