I'm all for gays getting married, but why did they have to use the rainbow to represent their sexuality? A rainbow was just a rainbow... but now anytime someone sees those colors together, it's automatically associated with homosexuality.

Why couldn't they use something less generic? Something more original?

There have been times when designing I'd be using some bright colors next to each other, and then I'd go back and edit it because I know the client will think "gaaaaaaay".

I feel like they stole this generic symbol of the primary colors in order. They should've thought it through a bit more.

    • yeah, screw them for using a happy symbol, and for taking the word 'gay' and making so we can't use it anymore! /smonospaced
    • You mean rainbows weren't gay before?ORAZAL
    • Mono, when was the last time you used the word 'gay' to mean happy?? Of course we can't use it in that sense any more. It's automatically associatediCanHazQBN
    • with homosexuality. But anyway, I'm talking more about the visual part of it...iCanHazQBN
    • How about polygamists using a simple checkmark to represent their movement? Or people with a sexual attraction to cats using a smiley face to represent theirs?iCanHazQBN
    • And I am not saying there's anything wrong with polygamy or feline attraction. lol.iCanHazQBN
    • It's the hijacking of such generic symbols for very specific movements that doesn't seem very thought-out.iCanHazQBN
    • I haven't, for the very reason that I can't without it meaning homosexual. But I also don't blame anyone for it, it's simply how the culture has played out.monospaced

    • It's a symbol of tolerance and inclusivity first.cannonball1978
    • Cannonball, no it isn't. The 1st thing people think of when they see those colors is "gay". How can you deny that?iCanHazQBN
    • It may also represent tolerance and inclusivity, but, by far, it really really symbolizes homosexuality.iCanHazQBN
    • Not that I really care so much about this. Just making an design/identity observation.iCanHazQBN
    • the rainbow as a flag does represent this, yes, and has for over 30 years.monospaced
    • ...supposed to stand for diversity.bklyndroobeki
    • kinda sucks the nazis co-opted all those cool nordic runes. the rainbow makes me think of leprechauns more than gayness, much less of a bummer than all kinds ofgilgamush
