There are downsides, and benefits to both. I've had my Drobo for almost 5-years now. I've had an extended warranty on it, and had to return it twice, but the service is always next day delivery.
I've heard a lot of people complain about them, but I have to say that I really like mine so far.
The biggest beauty behind it, is being able to hot swap drives, and being able to mix brands, and storage sizes. When I bought it 5-years ago, the maximum allotted was 4TB. Now it's 15TB.
I don't think you can't do that with any current NAS, from what I understand.
