Nope dbloc never went to school. Just got into it because it paid more than driving forklifts. And was easier. Been designing random shit outside day job for free for about ten years. Day job doesn't provide me the opportunities to do the work I would like, however provides me financial security in a easy work environment.

My take on the situation is the grey dude probably offered the guy an opportunity he thought would work for both parties benefits. The guy replied with a vibe of being insulted, and it insulted the grey dude. Both made rash decisions on feelings.

If the guy made the offer to me. I'd look at the time it would take. If I had available time I'd take it on with conditions. That he'd understand this is for free which means I get paid by satisfaction in the work i do. Means I will happily say fuck off if the project creeps or goes in a direction I'm not feelin. And that they'd need to explain that to the client ahead of time that if they didn't have the funds they will have to compromise there desires for mine. That is the cost.

Personally I'd like the connections and a major brand in my portfolio. Exposure is a wildcard. It might open doors, but experience is that is usually a small chance. But there is the brand recognition and credibility that goes with it. And if u stand by the work the better the deal is.

And if you think about it the advertising industry with its interns already has a slave type service. A fucked up social conditioning that one must pay their dues. They went to school and now have no practical skill or experience. In my case I might have done this awhile but don't have the credibility of a large agency to have been a slave too, or a client base where i worked on projects for free to build portfolio. Im working backwards getting a job with little credibility and employment based on a slim portfolio of projects i probably did for self promo, or free labor. Now employment is secure I am trying to build a better portfolio with larger clients. So that is why I would personally take it, .. if it met criteria of something i wanted or if the brand name would be a stepping stone and something id be proud to use for work besides just brand name. Id weigh out my values vs time.

Its really not something to demonize the guy for asking. He probably had the intention of doing a favor and was bitch slapped with the response and responded like a vagina. I'd be happy to be asked and if I started to be asked where i didn't have the time for such things I'd say nope sorry I need money if you want it. Supply and demand.

I also get the protectionism involved. If people will do free work that is less than great, at less cost, it kills the people who do great work. But that is the world of economics and supply and demand. Look at stock photography, pc's, or anything really. If you can provide a above par product at a reduced rate, you will sell more. The slight loss in quality perceived by 20% of people isnt worth the added cost to please the top 20%. Good graphics which is so arbitrary in what is good is becoming a commodity.

As long as the juice is worth the squeeze its a good move. But you need to know what you value. And decide for yourself. The guy decided it wasn't worth it and exposed it. Will it work out for him or not is to be seen. He of course chose it would be in his best interest to expose it and hoped or thought it would be more beneficial to him.
