you could just buy a used one and test via wi-fi... no reason to add the expense of a second phone line if you have wi-fi access (unless you'e specifically testing DL speeds for 3G/4G/LTE networks)
as for having 2 phones... i'm fortunate to have my brother's phone handy anytime I need to test on Android... I def. need more than just my iphone for testing. The Emulators out there aren't that bad... keep in mind too that there is a difference in screen size between the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 5 (I kept my old iphone 4 and test with it often as there are tons of folks who have yet to move-up to the iphone 5)
