Yes... Rent a Jeep as was mentioned above.
The Road to Hana can be a great day - or awful, depending on how many folks are on the road that day. Nice place to go for a day trip - I quite enjoyed it. And again, the volcano trip is cool (very cold at the top) as it looks like you're on the moon up there.

Also as mentioned - do not rent snorkel gear, buy or bring your own and go to a cove or lonely beach (like Honokowai Beach Park) where it's easy to get into the ocean and it's all free. You don't really need to go on an organzied trip (although I went out to Molokini Island and had a great time snokeling out there).

Also every evening, there is a free show (luau) at the
Ka'anapali Beach Hotel that is an interesting cultural experience that you won't find for free anywhere else on the island. Go early, get a table outside, order some food and drinks and watch an amazing sunset while listening to orginal Hawaiian music from a native family on the island. You can stroll up the beach walk and just park yourself on the hotel's property and enjoy the show. Quite fun and inexpensive.

The North coast highway around the top of the island (Hwy 30) is awesome. It gets freaky the farther you go, as the road narrows to a single lane and is at the edge of cliff with no guardrails. The scenery however is spectacular and very well worth the trip! There's also a major 'blow hole' up there that's a lot of fun. The rest is about kicking back and enjoying the island for what it is.
