I was talking about it with a friend of mine who works for the UN Economics forum and he said something along the lines of...

Russia is a bit like Germany was in the 1930's, Was a seriously powerful nation, has been neutered and sent back to the dark ages economically by another world power, is starting to come back out of that mire (due to energy prices) and is seriously fucked off and wants back what it has in the 70's... Land, prestige and serious world power.

Also it's shit scared of China. Ethic chinese make up a big part of the eastern part of the country and they are worried that they will be overrun: http://www.gateway2russia.com/st…

"The history of Chinese territorial claims to Russia feeds Russian fears of a demographic invasion. The Chinese leaders, Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping, were both on record as saying that the Russians had taken too much territory and that Vladivostok and Khabarovsk by right should be Chinese. Chinese tribes had settled in the Far East long before the Russians came there. However, the region was never part of the Chinese empire, and when Russia established its control over the Far East in the mid-19th century, it signed a treaty with the Chinese emperor asserting Russian sovereignty over the region."

"During a visit to the Far East of Russia last year the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, urged local authorities to do more to revive the economy. "If people here will not regenerate their region and economy, they will all be speaking Chinese or some other Asian language," Mr. Putin warned."

And there are signs that they are tooling up to gain back what they see as theirs too, especially the Baltic states.

I reckon for what it's worth that they are the largest threat to European stability. They supply 40% of Europe's gas and they know it.

    • I don't think they will ever regain the baltic states. Too much resentment and for good reason. The Baltics are on the way UP.Carl_Weathers
    • ...way up with their economies now stronger that ever. I was in Riga recently and they drive seriously expensive cars.Carl_Weathers
    • 40%? that's how much Canadian oil the americans consume!zarkonite
    • You're right about the Baltics, I was in Lithuania in 1997, people wrere happy to be free of the Russian choke hold....vaxorcist
