Cloudflare experience? May 8, 12, 11:13 a.m.
I'm working on a wordpress site that's likely to get a large spike in traffic at a predictable time. I've researched CloudFlare, CloudFront and various other similar ways to deal with the volume. Yes, we're caching, etc, but we're getting very prepared as site crashed last year before I was part of this project.
All of these "Cloud-x" methods are pretty similar in concept to using Amazon S3 or Akamai to deal with traffic spikes, but newer and more integrated into WP,etc.
Does anyone here have personal experience beyond what I'd google myself with Cloudflare and/or Cloudfront and/or anything very similar using WP with anticipated large spike in traffic?
junk food branding diagram Apr 27, 12, 11:13 a.m.
Hmmm.... a small number of companies seem to make almost all the heavily marketed junk food you see in the supermarket... and we designers are ...uh... well...sometimes these brands are our clients(!)
SSD's in laptop for Lightroom? Apr 12, 12, 6:32 a.m.
Has anyone here switched out their laptop's normal 5400 RPM Hard Drive for an SSD and noticed a huge improvement in Lightroom, specifically switching from one image to the next when you're tweeking a few hundred images?
The hassle of the swtich, moving OS, apps, etc is more of a concern for me than the cost... I figure it will take most of a day to make sure it all works, so I'm asking for anyone's personal experience...
mac trojan... beware Apr 5, 12, 6:20 a.m.
Yes.... macs are sometimes actually infected...
Flashback trojan reportedly controls half a million Macs and counting
Angry Cars Feb 10, 12, 2:55 p.m.
Does it seem more cars these days look angry than a few years ago?.... I've read the market research about people preferring cars with "power visuals" ..
. but I love this 50's Buick.... it looks a bit like the angry birds logo/character too.....
veggie juicer? Dec 16, 11, 11:23 a.m.
I'm looking for a vegetable juicer.... both for the design aesthetics and ease of use / quality of output.....
I use a blender often for the morning shakes (thanks MG33) but I want a juicer too, for the no-pulp factor, and of course, I just saw "fat, sick and nearly dead"
Does anyone here have strong personal experience? i.e. is it worth it to get a really good one? Is there actually a good semi-cheap one that's not gonna break?
Occupy vs Cops photo Nov 18, 11, 2:42 p.m.
kind of like lots of 60's protester vs cops photos where the cops looked really, really opressive.
This may become very, very iconic....
iPhone 4s.. is that all there is? Oct 5, 11, 7:30 a.m.
godaddy cookie hell? Aug 12, 11, 4:11 p.m.
Anyone except me experiencing godaddy cookie hell?
I have a PHP CMS that depends on cookies, it works on localhost and 2 other webhosts... and until today it worked on godaddy fine....
but for some oddball reason, it broke today, the cookies aren't working on godaddy, but they work fine elsewhere....
I can guess that godaddy's doing some domain aliasing on the sly? anyone have experience or wisdom, my client's not happy..
and of course, I'd rather use another host, this may be the final hassle that convinces client to switch, but please don't tell me that.. I need a shorter-term fix if at all possible.... argh!
Romney's Toothpaste logo? Apr 11, 11, 3:28 p.m.
Doesn't Mitt Romney's New logo look like a toothepaste logo? (Slate.com things so....)
best domain registrars? Apr 11, 11, 10:13 a.m.
I'm trying to talk a client out of using GoDaddy to register a domain.... he had network solutions in the past and hated them, he thinks the elephant killer's company is the only logical alternative...
I've used a number in the past, namecheap, register.com, easydns.com, etc...
Does anyone here have great experience with:
1. a registrar with great customer service when somebody messes something up
2. a registrar with a more corporate-friendly name, namecheap.com doesn't hold up well in a meeting full of suits(!)
iPad2's on ebay?!? Mar 31, 11, 12:22 p.m.
Anyone know why some iPad 2's are going for $100 more on eBay than they do at the apple store? Not even unlocked ones... .is there some hidden cost? some AT&T/Verizon gotcha?
Compared:
http://store.apple.com/us/browse…
then Ebay search for completed items / iPad 2
Of course, this should come back to normal if enough people go buy them, then sell on ebay....
I know a woman whose husband just bought a bunch of iPad2's to sell on Ebay....
FinalCut to Vegas? Jan 1, 11, 10:25 a.m.
Years ago I used Final Cut in grad school, learned it fairly well... now I may be learning Sony Vegas for various reasons....
Has anyone here made a similar transition? Any tips? Best books/websites/resources?
Do you have to retrain your brain about any organisation ideas or concepts?
Please ignore the FC/Vegas Mac/PC religious war I don't want to start... I just will be using Sony Vegas to edit my own footage on a series of 30 second web ads....
Thanks again....
last day of Kodachrome Lab Dec 30, 10, 4:53 p.m.
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/3…
aaargh.... I have had Dwayne's processed all my old kodachrome last year... but I loved the 120 kodachrome the most, and it's been discontinued for years...
Damn did I love kodachrome....
Photographers printed folios? Dec 3, 10, 1:36 p.m.
How many designers/art directors here have recently seen or wanted to see photographer's printed portfolios, as opposed to websites?
I'm asking as a photographer who is rebuilding his print portfolio, asking for what you wanted to see, what you didn't see enough of, what you saw too much of.... and/or if you're totally ignoring print books and just looking at websites....
thanks!
WP maintenance contracts? Nov 9, 10, 10:45 a.m.
I rarely do wordpress, but I've got a project where anything except wordpress would be an odd sell to this client....
Wordpress security seems to be an ongoing responsiblity, with many updates and such.... How do freelancers here handle small but potentially messy things like this?
I am wary of a "perpetual unpaid assumed responsiblity" where "since you installed it, you have to fix it" .... especially as I'm essentially doing this as a side gig related to a larger photo job for this client....
I am considering a quarterly billing, and even possibly outsourcing the maintenance, and/or finding a host that does this automatically...
Any wisdom appreciated... thanks...
define "finished" .... Jul 11, 10, 4:24 p.m.
Reading the longest project page I remember some "when will it be done" projects.... and I am seeing a chronic problem in web/dev biz....
When a client asks "when will it be done?!?" there's a messy situation.... Unless we define "done" they are asking "when will I finally be satisfied" and since they, not us are the ones who decide that, we have no control over "when it will be done"
Keeping people happy replaces any other method of measuring success unless we are able to define things and control expectations well....
So this is a business model risk for a flat bid project, and a relationship risk for an hourly bid project unless we define "done" in our first few meetings...
How do people here define "done" and/or how do you deal with this?
We tried at one place to have an "exploratory" phase of each project, but many clients kept rescheduling meetings and it seemed they were irritated by "all the mumbo jumbo, why don't you just get started" ... so how we sold our process wasn't effective in these cases...
