Cool Nerds

Stupid question, but can anyone help me think of someone considered to be a "cool nerd". Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Anderson Cooper, Andy Warholl, Albert Einstein etc?

Ignore button please.

Puuhleeeze? This site is railroaded by a couple really rotten apples. They don't add color or flavor with their "totally unique and out-there perspectives", they just drag the entire integrity of this site down.
For gawds sake, please reinstate the ignore feature. I've said it before, and will again...QBN, you will GET MORE TRAFFIC and sell adds at a higher premium were you to allow people to bypass the inflammatory, derogatory, misogynistic, homophobic, racist and otherwise hateful speech that a handful of users get away with here. Which by the way, is a direct violation of the terms of use each user agrees to when joining this site.
Reading that shiite turns people off, and hence, they stop visiting the site=less page views=less ad revenue. Were there a way to filter out those users who consistently ruin otherwise great, provocative, helpful, insightful, funny and useful threads, traffic would go up and this site just might be a friendlier place.
I know I've certainly cut down on my visits here as a certain so and so has recently returned and decided it was up to him to dominate every attempt at a civil discourse.
I'm not saying people can't type whatever they want, I'm just asking that we have a tool to filter the tools.
as you were.

NO on Prop 8

Just returned from a VERY lively protest rally in long beach, ca. 1000's of people turned out for the event, which according to the cops, was an illegal assembly. Total bullshit. Several people arrested etc. All of them with batons in their hands just waiting to crack some protester skull. The right to peaceful assembly my ass.
Pics to come.
Another HUGE rally in LA tomorrow though, everyone in the area needs to turn out.
I hate to caveat the part about me not being gay, I wish I were, believe me. I understand men far better than I do women.
I just cant believe the idea of crafting laws to take rights away from citizens. Laws should be made to protect our rights. the mormon church donated almost half the money in the campaign to pass prop 8. if their going to be involved in politics, they should lose their tax exempt status.
Ok, as you were.

I got robbed

About 20 minutes ago. I'm still shaky. damn I always wondered how I would react in such a situation.
Two 18ish y.o. thugs pulled into the driveway in front of me as I was walking down the sidewalk and jumped out. One said "Give me all your money" and I thought I heard him, but was also thinking, is this a joke, is this really happening? He repeated himself and I think I muttered "for real?" and his friend then asked "do you want to get shot homie?". I reached in my pocket and pulled out about $12. I had 6 or so $20's in my other pocket but I handed them the 12 and they jumped in the car and sped down a dead end alley. It was right in front of my house, so they saw where I live. I went inside and could hear the loud buzz muffler go down the alley then realize is was a dead end and come back.
I'm too paranoid to call the police for fear that they will retaliate knowing where I live.
It could have been worse, I'm going to consider myself lucky and leave it be. After all, I still have my iphone, my wallet w all my credit/debit cards and $120 in my other pocket. And I didnt get choked out or my face smashed in. Though my heart still feels like its going to come out of my chest and my hands are a bit shaky.
Anyhow, I dont want to tell anyone I know, cause I dont want to hear about how I should move and make them worry etc. So here I am telling you, the interneb. fuck! how lame are some people? I really cant comprehend the idea of doing something like that, and they were just kids.

some help?

Last Thursday I learned that my girlfriend of 8 years, and who I planned to marry this summer has been sleeping with someone else. It fucking destroyed me. I seriously don't know where to begin or what to do, all I feel is this deep paralysis, like I cant function. I come to work and cant do anything but dwell on how it all went down.
I've broken up with girls before, but this one was special to me, I really loved her and wanted to spend the rest of my life with her.
Any suggestions besides booze, cause as it is, I have to drink myself to sleep every night anyhow.
I even went out last weekend and hooked up with some hot girl from a bar, but that only brought guilt and more sadness.
Where does one begin? I'm a transplant to this city and have few real friends here, so most of my time is spent at home drinking and dwelling.

Anyone ever owned one? How was the maintenance? I've heard they are bloody expensive to repair and maintain, is this true?
anyone have any PERSONAL experience with them? oh and I'm talking about newer ones, like 04 and later.
I love the old ones, but I know they are tough to maintain.

Police Budgets funded by drug $

http://www.npr.org/templates/sto…
this is bullshit. Focusing law enforcement efforts to pad their budgets. Sounds like a bunch of (maybe) high school educated, power tripping, cops being put in charge of huge sums of money with zero financial training or any accountability or oversight.
Leaving it up to these individual sheriffs to honestly and accurately report and allocate 80% of this seized money, totaling millions of dollars.
Just how much of that cash is going into their individual pockets?

carried over from the Current book thread, I just started a QBN group on Shelfari.
Sign-up (takes all of 20 seconds) and lets do a book of the month type of thing. Should be fun!

Anything fun in Dallas?

Never been there, never had any interest really.
Heading out there for work this week, and I wonder what you might recommend doing while there?
I'm embarrassed to admit that I've pretty well prejudged that city as a red neck enclave full or fat americans, a place where GW Bush still reigns king.
However, like any big city, I'm sure it has some cool spots. What about good bars, restaurants, etc? I'm into art and rock and art rock and booze and that type of shiite.

career path advice

I got into this game about 9 years ago. I've worked for a few agencies, a few in-house teams and freelance.
On my resume I've been:
production artist
web designer
sr. designer
art director
sr. ui designer
sr. project manager
sr. producer
anyhow, in my current job I've been given a few options as to the path I want to take. I really dig the nuts and bolts of a project, I dig design but I'm also realistic in knowing I will never be one of the best designers in the world.
Knowing this, and having a firm understanding of how projects get done: the technical, the production, the art, the management, the client relations, managing teams etc. I've been given the option of Sr. Information Architect (manager).
My 5 year plan would be to be an e-commerce director or principal at an agency. My question is, do you think this new path as info architect gets me closer to those goals, or should I stick to the design side?
Sorry for such a long post. One more ?, I work in LA for a company of 1000+, what would you expect that title should be compensated? AIGA salary calculator wasn't much help in this arena.
btw, I'm a regular on this site, but used a new name to try to stay a bit anonymous.

snowboarding injury...again

fock. so about a year and a half ago I broke my back and pelvis in a snowboarding accident (I was under a different username then, here is that post: http://www.qbn.com/topics/432096… )
so I'm finally feeling rehabbed enough to go again, and what happens? I tear my freaking calf muscle in my left leg. Separated the muscle and caused a huge hematoma that had to be drained because my calf got the size of a cantaloupe. Fucking scary and bloody awful painful. I think its time to retire from the sport I used to live and breathe and has brought me so much joy in my life.

Your Creative/Design Process

If you were to give a presentation as to what your creative process might be, what kind of stuff would you say? What is your process?
Let's assume you're working with a new client, the brief is wide open and there are no tight deadlines or budgets.
How do you start? What sort of photography are you looking for, where do you look? Same with type? Do you look at design portals for inspiration, which ones? Are there other designers you look to for inspiration, which ones? Is there a base grid structure you follow? Just curious to know if anyone follows a regiment when they're working on new projects? It seems my approach is different every time for every project and I wonder if by streamlining that approach, if I could become better and more efficient.
Let the wise cracks begin!

unscrupulous

I work at an agency, and as many of you who have also worked in this soul stealing business, there are some shady characters.
Let's say our agency gets an RFP for some new initiative Company X wants to do. It may be a micro site, a rebrand campaign, whatever.
So usually what happens, is we'll do a brainstorming session (call it what you will, it's just semantics...) about how we can best solve the problem and deliver the presentation in a creative and interesting package.
I've just learned that a fellow CD has been registering the domain names of the ideas we come up with (not in his/her name directly), before we present it to the client. Then selling the domain back to the client when the client decides they want to pursue that particular campaign.
That's just shady to me. Apparently he/she has been successful in selling these domain names 3 different times, and for what he/she claims was a healthy return.
I was told about the plan directly from the person themselves, on the condition I not mention it to anyone. My stupid moral alarm clock thinks I should be the rat.
So then, innerneb massage bored, what would you do? tell person to knock it off (they're someone I consider a friend) or rat them out and probably watch them lose their job?

The Spirit

Saw it last night, was just ok. I thought Sin City was bloody fucking (pun fully intended) amazing. Whereas, The Spirit seemed a distant 2nd place. Also, it was a PG13 vs a very hard R for SinCity or 300. Miller just isnt meant to make to make movies for kids.
Eva Mendes MADE this movie. So So great and so so beautiful. Samuel L and Scarlett were also very good, but the rest were a bit of a snoozer.
The story itself never really materialized, particularly for someone who never followed the graph novels.
I dunno, maybe Im just a crotchety old man and a hard sell, but I just thought this tried really hard to bite the cinematic style of Sin City, but hardly compared. Had Sin City never been made, maybe this would have been more impressive, but the it just set such a high standard, The Spirit couldn't really compare.
