just lost everything

dead hard disk.

i knew something was wrong, so i brought home an external from work, at which point the computer just decided to die.

i'd never backed it up before because i never had enough cash for an external.

it's all gone.

all the photos i've taken over the course of the past year, all my music, all my psds for my freelance work. everything.

not to mention all the software i had... erm... acquired and have no way of replacing.

data recovery starts at £300 (which, obviously, if i can't even buy a stupid hard drive, i can't afford) and that only gets my my photos and music back...

maybe.

i know, i know, this is my fault for not backing up in the first place, but i'd have though apple would take some responsibility for the data, but no.

i feel physically sick.

thanks for listening.

:(

teh hijack thread

before i go bumping a thread that should have seen its last post long, long ago (i'm not naming any names), i'm going to start this hijack thread so as to prevent any skirmishes with the pro-euthanasia lobbies.

i'm doing alright, vespa, thanks! i've been doing the insomnia thing lately like i haven't done since i was a doctoral candidate so that's pretty weird. i don't feel nearly as drawn and quartered as i did at that point in my life, but something must be afoot to keep me from sleeping. part of me really enjoys it though. the halucinatory quality or like a film over the visible world that signals to something beneath it.

now i'm talking shite.

but this is a shite-talking thread, so that's okay.

is this okay?

here's the situation:

at my first job in london, we asked a bunch of agencies to come in and pitch to redevelop the website.

the organisation was too skint/tight to plump up for any of them to do the job, so i ended up pulling something together with remote coders, blah, blah...

anyway, the agency that i liked the best did really spot on visuals and all seemed like very good people. one of them even went to the same yoga studio as me and i still have his card.

is it okay to email him, explain my situation (needing work, basically) and send over my cv and some links?

should i ring him?

it's been over two years since i met these people, btw...

front window

the day before yesterday, there was a stabbing reported across the street from my house.

the police were canvassing all afternoon and evening, but i don't think they've found any other witnesses.

nor have they found a victim.

so yesterday afternoon, i get sent home for mandatory bed rest. it was a hot day and my street was bright and sunny.

as i walked up it, i heard someone in one of the adjacent flats practicing a piano. a man was out on his front stoop with a beer and a sandwich and a book, shirt off, trying to get a bit of sun. then a car drove by with a couple having an argument inside.

so i've been in my room looking out on the street since yesterday, moderately powerful digital zoom lens at the ready...

i'm going to solve this thing and bring the killer to justice.
