A friend of mine has been working at a small design firm for a year straight out of school. He wants to apply to the Chronicle Books Design Fellowship.

Is that a step down or up? It's for a bigger company, better pay, but it's only for 6 months vs. leaving a lesser paying, smaller company, long-term position.
