Print design software (for non-pros)

Adobe InDesign aside, is there any software out there that you would recommend for a client that wants to create relatively basic flyers, brochures, etc... I know MS Word can do this, but is there anything else out there I might be missing? Recommendations for both Mac and PC are welcome. Thanks!

San Diego screen printers

What's up my fellow SD QBNrs?

Can any of you recommend a local shop for getting a smallish batch of t-shirts screened?

Thanks!

Century Gothic on a mac

Hey guys,

Is Century Gothic a standard font on mac/apple computers? My research on Google is telling me it's a Microsoft font, but I want to know for sure and I don't own any macs to test on.

Thanks.

js (or php?) help

Hey guys,

So I need to make a site where the homepage loads normally, but when any links are clicked a disclaimer appears where the user must accept the terms and conditions before loading any additional pages/content.

The catch is that I want to incorporate this into a Wordpress website.

I could use javascript which I'm more familiar with, but that would be easier to bypass than php since it loads on the client side so I'm thinking it's not the best solution.

I really don't know how to go about creating it in php, but I feel like it's not that hard to do. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Photoshop Q - how to

Alright I'm sure this is pretty basic for some of you, but I just can't seem to get the results I'm after.

So I have this original picture:

http://www.evanwebdesign.com/nt/cloth_1.jpg

And here's what I need to do:
1.) Change the color of the cloth to a dark red/pink.
2.) Separate the cloth from the white background and put it on it's own layer.
3.) Keep the edges/shadows intact so it can be imposed realistically on top of a different background.

Here's a crappy example I did in 2 minutes:

I struggle with the edges. I think I need to be using channels but I've never really worked with them before. How would you guys approach this?

Thanks!

eCommerce merchant account

Hey guys. Did some searching first, but most posts on this topic seem to be pretty ancient.

Do any of you have a merchant account provider that you would recommend?

This would be used in conjunction with a Zen Cart website.

Thanks!

Creating a craigslist/classified website

I realize this is a bit of a longshot, but has anyone out there every been in charge of developing a craigslist or classified ad type of website?

The functionality is fairly straight forward. Basically I would need users to register, and then be able to publish a posting within a few pre-defined categories. Not too much else.

I'm not a hardcore developer, but I have not problem modifying existing scripts and creating a pretty-looking front end.

I've been looking at http://www.68classifieds.com/ which seems to offer most everything I need. Just want to make sure that there's nothing else out there I may be missing. Thanks!

A true story provided by craigslist

I was starting to type this in the "how to find freelance work" thread, but it's more of a rant and I thought it deserved its own thread.

As some of you know, I am a full-time freelancer now. Occasionally I go on CL and apply for a job or two that looks like it may have some potential. It's really just for the hell of it more than anything else, but let me tell you, craigslist is utter shite!!

Last Friday, approx. 3:00pm pacific time:

Me: Hello, this is Evan speaking.

Him (imagine that he sounds like a 20 yr-old kid): Hi I'm calling to see if you'd be interested in doing some web development work.

Me: Sure, I am always interested. But how did you find me?

Him: I'm looking at a response you put in to a job listing that we posted on craigslist a few weeks ago.

Me: Ok great. Well let me tell you just a bit about myself. I have a degree in digital media, been working in the industry for over 5 years etc... So what type of work are you interested in?

Him: Proceeds to run through the checklist of can do you php? can you do ajax? can you do flash? can you wipe your own ass? etc...

Him: So how much do you charge?

Me: Well, that depends on how much work I get. I am willing to work out something reasonable provided we can establish a mutually beneficial working relationship.

Him: So how much for full-time?

Me: (Getting irritated) $40/hr

Him: So you really think that's the going rate for a web designer around here? That's what we should be looking to pay?

Me: Yes I believe so. I'm a firm believer that you get what you pay for, but again I am willing to be reasonable.

Him: So let's have a look at your work then. (Note: He did not view any of my work before calling. Too bad because he could have saved himself the trouble.)

Him: So what's your best site on here?

Me: Well I think they all have their strengths, but I really li

Him: Ok so how about xxxxxxx.com?

Me: Whatever, sure.

Him (after viewing xxxxxxx.com for 1.6 seconds): You know what Evan, I gotta tell you man. You stuff is pretty weak dude. We're really looking to hire someone with a lot more expertise than you, but we are looking for someone to do some busy-work around here. I can offer you a full-time position for $10/hr, but we can't pay you more than that.

Me: Fuck off! *click. (Ok that's what I wish I said. What I really said was "I'm sorry but that's an insult to me. Goodbye.")

firefox 3

With the final update package for firefox 2 now deployed, I thought this would be a good time for yet another firefox 3 thread.

I haven't tried 3 yet, but I figure it's been around long enough now that many of the initial bugs have been worked out.

Who here uses 3? Who still uses 2? Does anyone test their websites in both?

deadline

trying to meet a deadline by tomorrow.

anyone else working late tonight?

Fortunately I'm not put in these kind of situations very often, but I think every once is a while is good for you. I almost enjoy it in a sick and twisted kind of way.

This navigation

Have any of you come across a tutorial on a navigation with drop-downs like on this site: http://beta.sling.com/ ?

Can I do something similar with jQuery?

Probably a shot in the dark here, but my searching has been fruitless thus far.

The moment you knew (2)

I'm talking about the moment you knew you were done being a designer.

For me this happened about 7 or 8 years after moment #1 previously discussed.

I was really struggling on yet another web comp for a client. It looked like shite. I was running out of inspiration and felt trapped by the same formula I had been implementing for years.

I realized that all I do is give the same gift with different wrapping paper day in and day out.

I've been around long enough to watch trends come and go in graphic design. I don't really want to be caught up in these trends anymore, but clients keep requesting "that look."

Since this epiphany I've been moving more into the development side of things.

I want to be done being a designer, but I can't really escape it right now.

Maybe I'm just burnt out.

Google/SEO Q

Is there something special I need to do to get a listing of a website's pages to appear directly below its entry in google's search results.

Example: when I search "qbn" in google, I get a listing of pages and popular threads that appears below the regular search listing.

I'm sure having an XML sitemap would help, but maybe this is outside of what I can control?

need help, flash mp3 player

Hey guys. I'm embarrassingly bad at flash.

I need a way to stream a single mp3 via some type of flash player. The catch is that it needs to have a volume control which I can preset at around 50% and it needs to autoplay on page load.

Is there a built-in component in flash 8 that can do this for me? I know I can import video via the flv player, but I don't see an option to import audio.

I have tried using http://musicplayer.sourceforge.n… and http://www.macloo.com/examples/a…, but these don't meet my needs 100%.

Thanks

Is this possible?

http://designedbyevan.com/nt/select_photo_popup.jpg

I want a select element that has a different image pop up next to each item when the cursor goes over it.

I know there are a lot of jQuery tooltips out there that can do this type of thing, but will they work on a select element?

Help out a photo slacker

I'm shooting my friend's wedding on Friday and I need some advice. I've been so busy with work I haven't had a chance to practice my portraits as much as I would have liked and I'm scurrrred.

Here's my equipment and my game plan.

Canon rebel XT w/ stock kit lens (18-55mm)
Canon 430ex flash
Borrowed Canon 30D as a back-up. (I know it's better but I am not comfortable with it)

I am going to be shooting an outdoors from around 4:30-7:30pm. I plan on setting my camera to aperture priority mode, using the flash when necessary, shooting in RAW, and generally just taking a shit-ton of photos to make sure I get a few good ones. I am going to have plenty of memory cards, extra batteries, and my laptop on hand to dump the photos on to.

I know at least some of you guys have done this stuff before. What else do I need to know?

SEO help

Let's say you have 3 domain names that serve up the same content.

It would be best to use 301 redirects and drive all the traffic to a single domain name right?
