New Aesthetic

Not exactly new. but feel this should be a thread here. It is basically an art and design movement inspired by seeing the world like digital devices.

It started here.
http://new-aesthetic.tumblr.com/…

then it got complicated

Then some more people joined in.

Dell XPS14z

I've always been a fan of Dell. I've also always been surprised that PC designers never took any hints from apples success - less is more, metal is nice, etc. However this new Dell is so similar to a MBP i find it hard to believe this isn't a joke. Apart from moving the power button, there wasn't any other design decisions made.

Email Disclaimers

Does your company force you to put disclaimers at the bottom of your emails? are they useful? do i really need to explain that my email to you is to you and not to someone else? If my footer states "You may not present this email to another party without consent from the sender" Can i have you thrown in jail if you reply to me and CC your boss?

Branded brands

When companies acquire smaller companies sometimes they keep they merge the branding, like fedex kinkos. Can you think of any more/similar examples of this?

IPR quandry

So i have a client who's business is producing designer chairs under licence from the original designers. In a recent visit to my office he discovered we had one of these, and was not happy.

http://www.amazon.com/Verner-Pan…

At one point he wanted no connection between our two business for our purchase choice.

As a design company do you think it's OK to buy a replica chair? Or does that undermine your company and your clients?

No More Computer Games

"A few months ago, a producer at a major video-game company startled me by admitting that the economic viability of the triple-A video-game production cycle — the expensive development process, in other words, by which games like Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Uncharted, and BioShock are unleashed upon the world — is in all likelihood doomed. Shortly after that, a developer told me he has a hard time imagining how single-player narrative video games are going to survive in the long run; such games, he believes, will eventually be seen as a historical anomaly. Neither man was particularly thrilled to imagine a future largely absent of the kinds of games he makes and most cares about, but current trends could not be ignored.

I told the developer that he sounded a bit like my fiction-writer friends going on about the inevitable death of the novel. “It takes one person to write a novel,” he told me. “To make the kinds of games we’re talking about, you need several dozen people — probably more like a hundred — with training across several fields. If the money’s not there, which is increasingly the case, the games can’t be made.”

The two most enjoyable console video games I have played in the past six months, Bulletstorm and Dead Space 2, underperformed commercially despite superlative reviews. (Not even the condemnation of Fox News, which asked if Bulletstorm was “the worst video game in the world,” could push that game into best-sellerdom.) Another game I loved, Shadows of the Damned, which was developed by Shinji Mikami and Suda 51, two of the most admired, influential, and eccentric minds in games today, moved something like 26,000 copies in its first month of release. Even recent “successes” like Portal 2 and L.A. Noire, which were reviewed everywhere, failed to sell as many copies as projected."

srsly? i'm going to have to play angry birds the rest of my life? I was hoping to spend my retirement playing GTA 14 VR

Brochure Design Questions

About 10% of the work we do is brochure design, but about 30% of the problems we have is brochure design! Looking for some advise.

How do you guys structure your creative brief?
Do you insist on ALL content first?
What payment structure works best?
At what point do you charge hourly?
If the brief is ambiguous (eg, make it elegant) What's a good way to work it step by step.

We rarely have issues with Web and Vi, why are brochures such bastards.
*production isn't a problem though. :)

Stamp of approval

oh! hello.

Looking for stamps of approval, specifically in food and beverage. I'm at a bit of a loss here!
Trying to think country specific.

how do you do this?

Say if I was making a TV wall, with 12 old TVs. Each TV played it's own video, but i could also control single TV's or use them as one big screen.

What hardware software do i need for that?

Time

just read this as a comment on adage. really got me thinking. how do you want to spend yours?

We have 24 hours a day. How do I want to spend them? SLEEP - 8 hours. EXERCISE - 2 hours. EATING - 3 hours. INTIMACY/CONNECTION WITH SPOUSE (either physical, intellectual, emotional, or combination of them all) - 2 hours. CONNECTION WITH FRIENDS (either in person, over email, phone, etc) - 1.5 hours. CREATIVE INPUTS (including listening to music, looking at art, reading, or watching tv or movies) - 2 hrs. CREATIVE OUTPUTS (including writing, playing an instrument, drawing, etc.) - 2 hrs. QUALITY TIME WITH MY KIDS - 2 hrs. That leaves about an 1.5 hrs for...volunteering, errands, chores, monitoring investments, posting comments on AdAge.com(!), etc. This is just an example of how fast you can use up 24 hours in a day without exchanging any of your time for money. Sometimes these categories can be combined, or shifted around during a week. Sometimes the unexpected gets in the way. But in no situation is there enough time for earning money.
