Printing & Variable Data

I'm in the process of designing some print collateral for a upcoming conference. These include name badges, room signage and such. I'd like to push these some and not print black text in a white area as many do. My current design has a blue, full bleed name badge with white attendee and company names. I'm looking into printers now. Suggestions?

11x17 Printers?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a fairly dope color laser printer that can handle 11x17 and maybe even some heavier weight printers. Looking into this HP model:

New Portfolio

My latest: www.bmace.com

One thing I'm struggling with is the menu expansion. If you open everything it goes off the page, but if I use the auto collapse function I had it looks wonky. I say close some of the menu. I want you to be able to see more of it at once. Thoughts on the design? Thoughts on the menu?

3D Studios

I'm looking for some good 3D shops that have some experience working with interactive shops. I'd like to find a large shop (like Speedshape) as well as a small one (like Hook). Does anyone have suggestions? Anyone freelancing at that level?

Firefox+Georgia Problem

I'm running into a strange issue when using Georgia in Firefox. I'm running Firefox 3.5.1 & 3.0.12 on several Macs and PCs. On the Macs, the Georgia displays in bold even when the font weight is defined as normal. It works fine in IE & Safari on all machines. Has anyone had this issue before? I'm at a complete loss.

Example CSS:

.menu_list {
font-family: Georgia;
font-weight: normal;
font-size: 18px;
float:right;
text-align:right;
width: 200px;
padding-top: 0px;
padding-bottom: 0px;
padding-right: 0px;
padding-left: 0px;
margin:0px;
}

Type Designers

I'm looking to compile a list of type designers currently residing in the USA. They needn't be famous but should be experienced, having released several fully developed faces or a family of sorts. Anyone you are a fan of or know is doing good work?

I found this earlier which was a good starting point of recent people but I have to comb through them: http://new.typographica.org/2009…

Scrambled FLV

I'm working on a small video based site this month. It hosts about 10 large videos. Going through tests, I decided they looked best at 700kbps, variable bitrate (VBR) and they are 800x450. The rub is that we're looping the videos and in Flash player 9 124 every so often things go crazy as you can see below:

http://www.bmace.com/images/scrambled.jpg

I *think* I have solved this on the video end, rendering them at a constant bit rate (CBR) but as anyone with a bit of knowledge about this, the files are a bit larger in size and some of the higher motion videos suffer a bit.

Has anyone experienced this before and if so, is CBR vs. VBR really the issue here? Is it part of the issue or am I totally off track?

ShinGoPro

Does anyone know where I can download or purchase a OTF version of ShinGoPro in several weights? It's a Japanese font and I haven't had much luck with Google.

USA Green Printers

Has anyone here used or know of some good environmentally aware printers for any of their projects? They don't have to only do green printing but I need to find someone knowledgeable on the subject and who offers some green services.

Creative Office Space

I'm looking for our first office this summer and I wanted to see if anyone has found a space that isn't a "typical" office type space and made it into a studio etc. Pictures, ideas, thoughts etc. I have found 2 spaces, one is actually over top of an automotive business. It's really open and the rent is cheap because of the garage below. I've thought about looking into it more just for the shear fact we don't have to worry about being to "loud".

Using Quotes Legal?

We're doing a design right now that we'd like to use quotes no to drive home the idea of bravery. The client loves it, however, we have just considered the legal question.

If we use a quote by John Doe on their website, is that legal? We're using their words to promote something. Also, is there a difference if it's a living person in the same vertical (say an athlete and a football product website) and a deceased person like Benjamin Franklin?

Any ides where I can get more information on this? I'm obviously not using the right keywords in Google.

Font Weights + Flash

I still have never gotten a real answer to this question in the last 10 years so I'm asking again on as many forums as possible.

Why is it that with most OT format fonts, I have 100 weights show up in Illustrator and Photoshop but I only get a very small fraction of them to show up in Flash. It's killing me that we can't get this to work in Flash on our latest project. We really need some of the weights we mocked with and it's just not happening at the moment.

Does anyone know why this is and does anyone have a solution other than creating font outlined vectors and importing the text as art. We need this to work dynamically for news etc.
