Brilliant

Whenever I work with our UK counterparts, whether on the phone or when they visit, they throw around the word "brilliant" all the time, which confuses so many people here. I have to explain that in the USA, brilliant is defined, basically, as "really, really smart, like genius smart" and that when they compliment the pimple-faced kid bagging their groceries at the bodega with a "brilliant" and they get a weird look it's because the kid can't figure out why they're calling him smart just for ringing them up.

Haruken!

Apparently, Japanese girls are into photographing themselves performing invisible "energy attacks." Great images!

SimCity

Although I'm not a gamer, I'm very excited for the upcoming release of SimCity. Seems like they are going back to their Maxis roots and creating a new version that should capture everything that made the original such a success. The GlassBox engine is super intriguing, and so is the multiplayer aspect. I know I'll be putting tons of time into this.

8 Pro vs. RT

What are the differences between Windows 8 Pro and Windows RT, and how are the differences relevant to the Surfaces? It's harder for me to find the answers than I had anticipated. Thanks.

Currency symbol

What do you consider to be a generic symbol that could represent currency while remaining independent of specific currency symbols (dollar, euro, etc)?

Shooting of the Day

I hate to start a thread with this title, but it doesn't exist here yet and sadly, probably should, considering the sick frequency we are experiencing.

Here's the latest from this weekend. An Army veteran shoots and kills attendees of a Sikh temple.

Wool Omnibus

I would normall post this in the sci-fi book thread, but I think it's so good that it deserves its own.

As a long-time sci-fi fan, I'm always on the lookout for a great book to read in the genre, but they're far and few between. On top of a great sci-fi concept, in order to be great, it also has to employ great writing and characters. Isaac Asimov, Heinlein and Vonnegut (amongst many others) were great at this and have gone down in history as the great sci-fi authors. I think we have a new addition: Hugh Howey.

Hugh Howey wrote a short story called Wool just under a year ago. He self-published this novelette and developed a quick and strong following. With encouragement from fans, he wrote several more books in the series over the last few months. These have been released as a single book entitled Wool Omnibus.

Of the current 690 Amazon reviews, 618 are 5 star. I couldn't resist, so I bought a copy. They aren't wrong. If you're a sci-fi fan, buy this now, you won't be disappointed.

Cycle race sponsorship

Hello QBN. After unsuccessful Googling, I'm reaching out to all of you for help finding examples of how sponsors have addressed their branding in sponsoring a cycle race. I'm developing everything from signage (along and above the course) to our tent environment and giveaways, but this is an area I have little knowledge of. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Wormhole Switch

http://j5create.com/ws.htm

At work I am forced to use a Mac and a PC. The Mac is where I do my design work, the PC is where I do my emailing. I find myself transferring files between both computers dozens of times a day just to email them. I have to forward emails to get them on the other machine so that I can copy the text. Shared folders, network drives and USB thumb drives are all working, but I just discovered this Wormhole Switch and I have to say, I'm blown away.

It essentially turns ANY two computers into one. Plug-and-play and I can now move my mouse from one screen to the other. Copy paste from one computer to the next. Amazing, and I highly recommend it.

To a better workflow.

AMC The Killing

I caught the two-hour pilot and second episode to this new series, and I have to say, I'm riveted. It's gearing up to be the best show I've seen since The Wire. This might be AMC's best work so far with the most real characters and true emotion I've seen in a crime drama.

Thoughts?

"You will" commercial.

I was just looking at Apple rumors and this commercial from the early 90s popped into my head. I remember seeing it and thinking, that's incredible, but I can't imagine how it could be possible with even the best technology at the time. What's eery is that it's very accurate, except that it was Apple who brought it with AT&T's help.

I am fascinated by the foreshadowing, because at the time a computer was a big box and wireless data was still in its infancy. What should we expect in another 15 years?
