The Waltons Nov 6, 08, 10:09 a.m.
I always remember my parents watching The Waltons from when I was just tiny tiny - looking back, Im kinda surprised, they grew up in urban and suburban england, and are entirely non-religious, and neither came from a particularly large family.. On the face of it, they had little in common with either the backgrounds or the circumstances of the characters who lived in rural west virginia in the 40s..
And yet we would always watch it, on our black and white tv, eating our dinner, rain beating on the window, itchy 70's brown clothes.
As a kid I loved the simple stories of genuine characters, and real family values - it was a simple yet true child-like view of an adult world, and it helped shaped my earliest views of the US itself.
It almost certainly influenced in some way, my decision to come to this country, and although I have a broader contextual cultural view of how the waltons fit, fundamentally my opinions are the same.
Recently they have been showing The Waltons on the old-tv type channel, and as I get my daughter ready to walk to school, we have been watching it and it's great to see her enjoying it in the way that I did when I was her age, now actually living here..
That thread yesterday asked for images that defined the US - I think The Waltons go a long way to describing the character of this country - family values of hard-work, fairness and opportunity, of rolling with life's punches and of striving for the best life possible, in whatever circumstances we find ourselves.
All my friends back in the UK, and all except my daughter here laugh like Hyenas when I tell them I like the Waltons, but I don't care.
Ralph Waite rocks, and Earl Hamner should be carved into mount rushmore.

fool Oct 13, 08, 8:21 a.m.
I said some stupid things out loud that I thought my wife would not hear, but she did, and she got more upset than I've ever seen her, and feel stupid and bad.
Well - I was fucken angry.
Walmart Shame Sep 23, 08, 8:45 a.m.
Boo.
After 3 years of not ever going into a Walmart store, as protest against their general corporate bastardness, meanness to employees, etc, my wife and I succumbed to the inexorabilities of the credit crunch and got some desperately needed groceries there last night. It was either that or not feeding the child as well as we could on the budget we had.
We both feel bad, like scabs or traitors, and are going to sooth our souls by volunteering at a food kitchen for homeless people.
Anyone got any other ideas on how we can make good on this ? : /

What should I do? Sep 8, 08, 5:06 a.m.
I am about to make a decision regarding something in either my personal or professional life, that is somewhere between inconsequential and life-alteringly important.
At this point, I will give a little background in how I came to be in this position and maybe describe some of my hopes or fears of some of the outcomes.
Any advice or reflections on similar experiences should be posted below.
PS: Extra information that may or may not be critical.

Band photos Aug 27, 08, 10:35 a.m.
Band photos are all crap.
There's always the 'craaaazy' one, usually the lead singer, pulling a face or looking really mean and into it, whilst the others stand there looking awkward like it's a bloody family portrait or nervously half-interacting with the antics of the 'crazy one'.

Defy or confirm this with examples.

IE Div clear etc :/ Aug 13, 08, 12:46 p.m.
hey all...
Anyone got any idea why the footer div on my page
http://www.relentlessrentals.com…
doesn't make it to the bottom of the page in IE, but is fine in FF ?
It's set to clear: both as you can see in the css, and the container divs for the one's it's clearing have a height attribute..
Bloody thing.
blog software Aug 12, 08, 11:19 a.m.

Need to implement some decent blogging software for a client - multiple users accounts etc, up to $200 or so...
Whats good out there ?
div nonsense... Aug 8, 08, 1:54 p.m.
ok, so I've got a series of 4 divs that Im trying to put next to each other in a row.
The class is set to display: inline, and I've set the width to 155.
When I put a 155px in each, then they all sit next to each other fine, and it looks great.
However, when I try to add some text under the image, it busts out the side, and sends it all wonky..
I'm kinda confounded, I thought it was real simple..
Any help gratefully received..
earthman Aug 1, 08, 2:04 p.m.
hey folks, did this a while back, would be interested in any feedback..
It's mostly just footage and stills edited together, rather than any particularly fancy 3d stuff, but any comments gratefully received.
