LA Life

So, in probably a little over a year the wife, kid and I will be upping sticks and moving to LA from the midwest, as the wife is going to work in production design for TV and possibly some movies, hooray.
I've only been to LA a couple of times about 10 years ago and the parts I saw were awful - I liked Venice, but the rest of the places I saw were crowded, run-down and entirely uninspiring.
Of course there's this great legend about the place, being genuinely cool and interesting and varied and diverse and laid back, only I've seen none of that. I know there are LA folks on here who love the place - what should I be looking forward to, considering I'm actually moving there from a conservative, cultural desert, but am actually a lefty, technohead vegan eurotrash type guy ?

QBN Zoom ?

How many here haven't used qbn at it's standard size for years ?
I'm sure we all have 1280+ monitor widths, and have had for some time.
I've had it cranked up to 125% since I got a browser that could do it, several computers before this current aging collection of parts.

epiloguɘ Web Series

My splendid wife was production designer (amongst other roles) for her College's rather excellent web series:
http://epiloguetheseries.com/
I was on set a few long days, assisting in some of the production, a great group of people worked very hard under some dreadful conditions and I honestly think the work is splendid and would humbly appreciate any support from the throng here. A thousand thanks.

Fundraising Sites

Anyone got any input on the to's and fro's of different fund-raising sites ? Nothing major, not a reg charity or anything, just to raise a few 100 to send a kid on a thing. Ideally just a site where they can have a page and click to donate $n, etc.
I could hoof up a paypal link etc, myself, just wondering if there's anything super simple to use to get rolling in no time.
Anyone ?

Austin, TX

Hey, just came back from a few days down there - my first time. Boy, what a an awesome city :) Saw my first unironic handlebar moustache, paired with sockless dress-shoes and shorts, went canoeing on the lake, ate the most awesome food cart food and vegan fayre, went drinking on 6th street, danced myself silly in Kingdom, blissed out and roasted at the pool at Baxter Springs park, met some great chilled people, thrift shopped til I thrift dropped, was delighted to the point of astonishment with the flagship Whole Foods, and enjoyed all of it, cliched or not, without an ounce of ironic, post-modernist snark - something the entire city seemed bereft of. Congrats, ATX, you are officially one of my fave US cities, can't wait to go back, maybe permanently. Any atxers here ?

Straight-acting gay font needed.

Looking for a serifed typeface, preferably a top, to be cool and unflambouyant in day to day duties as a title font in a low-key boutique website, but to bring a touch of classic panache to the proceedings.
Was looking a very light weight Clarendon hybrid, but not sure. Anyone ?

Anyone implementing this is a cool, value-adding way ? What sort of clients are demanding the new functionality and who's making actual good use of it ? Any cool examples ?

Open Letter To George Michael..

"Dear George Michael,
Thank you so much for penning the wonderful "Last Christmas" during your work as part of pop group "Wham", it has, more than any other festive pop record, become a modern-day classic, and I among many others regard it as their favourite ever Christmas song.
How sad it makes us, however, to watch the video and see you with a girlfriend when we know that's not how it really is; times have changed and all the decent people in the world are more accepting of same-sex relationships now and as such we would urge you to remake the classic video but with a partner whose gender is of your preferred choice. We don't think anyone should have to see you pretend anymore.
Thank you, George, and have a Merry Christmas"
