You know, I thought I wasted a lot of time on the internet. Let me just break something down:
You have: 38,324 : responses. You joined in 2003...
38324/5 = 7665
7665/365 = 21
By this, on average, you post one reply every hour, 21 hours a day, every day, for 5 years. This, to me, is a whole new level of message board dedication.
I'm going now, so that my head can explode in privacy.
HTML Table May 13, 08, 7:13 p.m.
I've been around this so many times, but lately the W3C has pissed me off and their standards are practically worthless (not entirely their fault, but their snail pace and the fact that none of them are successful web designers doesn't help). Anyway, as much as I love DIVs and SPANs and used to trash talk the table junkies, doesn't it just make sense to use tables? I mean for all practical reasons tables are just better since their nature is the grid, which is how I formulate a design in the first place.
Anyone think I'm crazy, apathetic, or feel like doing the same?
Bryce... Aug 3, 08, 9:32 p.m.
Did you ever go to the Stony Brook School?
Um... 'critique'? Mar 30, 08, 8:22 p.m.
Okay, well put simply, I don't do type... I know basically nothing about it, blah blah blah, I'm 16 and not yet allowed to take typography at my school. Anyway, tear me apart because I need to learn.
I just want a simple little image to place atop my portfolio.
Mindfucked by Tetris Aug 2, 08, 10:32 p.m.
So about a year ago I got really hooked on Tetris... (Quinn for OS X, actually...) and I played it probably for around 6-8 hours a day religiously for an entire week. I would wake up around 4am to play for a half hour just to stay sharp or something. During (and a little after this time) reality started getting really dreamy and distorted. Everything started fitting like tetris pieces, it was real strange. Every object in sight had to be organized to fit and whenever I walked it was on carefully planned paths to weave through an imaginary crowd. I had Riiiiight/JamalJenkins/JesseJens... revelations with everything I saw and did, and it was really fucking weird because I felt just like a machine processing everything I sensed. Every time I wanted to draw, everything would end up being evenly spaced block forms or else I'd get a headache. Even when I ate, I had to read the nutrition info to bring all of the parts to odd ratios. Just wondering if anyone else has done this or what, it's got to be the most innocent thing I've ever done to have such an extreme effect. I try not to bring on the weird here, but someone else I know was talking about it last week and was relieved that someone else had the same thing :P
P.S. Don't try it if you're afraid of migraines.
desks Feb 14, 08, 8:42 p.m.
So I'm thinking of getting a desk, and I had a little fun reminiscing over some of my favorites in the past (note: I do not necessarily have the money to afford any of these)...

hello Feb 4, 08, 8:08 p.m.
so instead of just barging in on the community, I thought I'd take a second to give a formal (okay, not quite) hello.
I am Ian Clark Smith. I am 16 in 19 days. I dropped out of high school and attend a community college, where I take multiple art & design classes to keep myself disciplined. I also play neoclassical guitar, on average 6-8hrs a day. I listen to lots and lots of music spanning many genres, excluding country, crappy death metal (and various spin-offs), and most rap. I consider myself too young and inexperienced to call myself an artist, musician, or designer, however I have been deeply involved with all of them since I can remember. I live in Sharon, CT which is 2hrs from NYC– where I was born and plan to return to come college time. My schools of interest for college are in no particular order: Cooper Union, Georgia Tech, NYU, MIT, Oxford, and RIT. My father is an architect, illustrator, and architectural renderer (http://www.clarksmithrendering... and my mother is an interior designer. I consider myself a libertarian. My family has a history of chronic insomnia. I believe drugs are a [very] good thing when used responsibly. Philosophy is an integral part of my life. I have no style. I make an effort not to be materialistic or. I rarely speak when I don't feel it's necessary. I am not a boring person, but I do not present myself well when I'm not playing music.
Face...
You almost know everything about me, so lay on the hate! Just kidding. Please, just say something cool. Or if you have any advice on school, self-schooling (like free/paid resources for artists/designers, summer programs/internships in NYC, etc), or awesome [design] books that I should read (like Grid Systems in Graphic Design) then speak up. Heh. This was long...
browser width Jan 24, 08, 12:21 p.m.
How wide do you usually keep your browser window? wondering so I can make a layout decision on my site...
os x Feb 16, 08, 11:03 p.m.
is so extremely fucking slow all day. It's been freezing every 10 minutes from CPU leaks in EVERY app. System Preferences, Activity Monitor, iClip, Safari, Finder, Photoshop, even TextMate. What the hell is going on? I'm running 10.5.1, anyone had similar issues that were fixed by 10.5.2? The thing's so damn hot I'm considering putting it in the fridge...
Dead sleepers Apr 21, 08, 6:58 a.m.
Anyone else here die when they go to sleep? Every damn night I sleep so deep, nothing can wake me up. Guitar amp cranked to 10? Nope. Construction one room over? Nope. Family shaking me and spraying water on my face? Nope. I wake up when my body says it's time, it's time, end of story.
Also because I realize that the thread topic made this rather anti-climactic I have included the obligatory awesome/scary combo of superheroes and zombies. AHHHHH!
album art... what app? Feb 12, 08, 9:46 p.m.
If you were hired to do album art, which app would you consider to be best suited to the job? My first impulse makes me open Photoshop, but then a little thing inside me tells me I should use Illustrator, but then I remember I've never really used InDesign before. What do you guys think? I imagine I'll be doing the actual ART in illy, but would it make any sense to put that into InDesign for the booklets, cover, etc?
NY law Q (with alcohol) Jul 12, 08, 7:38 p.m.
I'll spare you all my personal thoughts right now (not so fun talk with my dad), but was wondering a very simple question:
In New York state, what are the laws for a minor being in a location where alcohol is served? i.e. at 16 is it legal for me to go to parties and the like where there is alcohol? Also, how does the law change per situation (if the alcohol was free for instance)?
I've never had a problem being in bars or at any parties before as long as I didn't try to buy anything at the bar itself.
I'm asking because I don't have a car yet so if my dad gets into a little pissy fit about a party, I've got no real way of getting there. I figured it could be alright, since shit definitely won't be free, they'll probably want ID, and I don't feel like getting drunk this weekend anyway.
portfolio sw Mar 30, 08, 3:35 p.m.
I missed it in the filter– what was that extremely basic software for building a portfolio? I think it was built in PHP
Find me a font May 21, 08, 6:32 p.m.
I'm looking for some font ideas for a project. I need a font that looks good in very heavy weights... Slab serifs are a bit too chunky for my purposes though.
Something like Clarendon Heavy, but if I don't see anything better it's what I'll be using.
The thing I like about Clarendon are both 'c' characters. I know I'm kind of stupid and all but if you guys can think of anything let me know.
Also if you hate me asking questions, tell me and I'll try to wait until I have actually meaningful ones.
Cooper Union? May 8, 08, 6:36 p.m.
Anyone here going to or graduated from Cooper Union? I'm looking for someone who can give me a little insight into what the student life is like (how hellish are schedules, etc) and how the application process went. Also wondering what you included in your portfolio...
...assuming this 'you who has gone to Cooper Union' exists...
Oh my god. (NSFW?) LOL Jul 23, 08, 8:06 p.m.
P.S. Isn't it ironic that at the bottom, this site was "made on a Mac"?
Paint markers Jun 12, 08, 11:50 a.m.
What do you all recommend? I was thinking of ordering some POSCAs, but every store sells DecoColor so I figured I'd give them a try as well. Any suggestions/comments?
Ibanez VM-1 Apr 22, 08, 6:51 p.m.
My new baby came today, it was made in 1987 (a year before it went on sale) and is one of the first production runs. Ebony fretboard, Honduras Mahogany body, custom non-locking Edge Pro bridge, etc etc. Picked it up for $725 and it's sounds awesome. Just snapped these pics very quick to show some friends + band mates so I didn't bother uploading HQ or setting up any good shots. Anyway, if you have any remote interest in guitar then bask in its glory...
QuinnBN Scoreboard Aug 3, 08, 12:01 p.m.
Post up your Quinn high scores and player profiles here (easiest way to prove your score). When you first launch Quinn it should ask if you want to store your high scores on their server, I recommend it.
Download Quinn for free here: http://simonhaertel.de/quinn/hom…
