What a ridiculous argument, citing sources from the 20's and 30's
mrdobolina
(Jan 23 06, 07:26)
So, the 'Vote Liberal' thread became rather bifurcated due to my comments about abortion. And spk seems to have a mild seizure when I mention US politics in a Canadian thread. So, I'm taking it elsewhere which is what I should've done in the first place.
Mrdobolina:
I pulled those quotes from the 20s & 30s because they came from the mouth of the founder of Planned Parenthood. And they are obviously at great odds with the *perceived* role that Planned Parenthood has played in our society.
To this day, that organization has done absolutely nothing to distance themselves from her rhetoric. So her quotes unfortunately still bear some sad poignance.
A rational assessment of Planned Parenthood's goals & strategies since its founding displays that organization's commitment to its founder's worldview.
Let us guard against the accusation that we of the emerging generation live in arrogant short-sightedness that refuses to understand and learn from the words and deeds of those who have gone before us.
If it is ridiculous to cite the founder of Planned Parenthood, then it is also ridiculous to cite the US Constitution when discussing laws and rights because it was written a long time ago.
If any of you are curious about Margaret Sanger's words, it's in the local library. Should be easy to find.

Logo for my church. The name is Twin Oaks Presbyterian Church. We're fairly traditional, suburban but with a growing number of young people like myself.

Studio Name Sep 13, 07, 8:30 a.m.
Inspired by the new Build video... been thinking about the name for the studio I hope to launch someday. It will be small, just me and my wife (to start with, at least).
Obviously the current moniker is Metagramme Studio. That was the name I came up with back when I was looking for work and wasn't sure if I'd go into business for myself or take on a FT position elsewhere. Obviously, the studio path didn't stick...but it's my dream to run a very small design office someday. Not sure if I'd want to stick with the existing name, drop the extra 'me' and call it Metagram (I wonder if Metagramme sounds rather pretentious), change it to Steel & Co. (as in my name, Matt Steel), or something else entirely.
Suggestions? Go.
*fully realizes there will most likely be an avalanche of asinine suggestions.

gramme Jr. has finally arrived! Oct 10, 08, 7:37 p.m.
Graham Benjamin Steel was born on October 8 at 4:21 am. He weighed in at 7 lb. and 19.25" long. Both mother and baby are doing fine, we got home this afternoon and are looking forward to not sleeping in a hospital tonight.
And no, I did not name my son after my screen name.

Where should I go??? Feb 27, 06, 6:46 p.m.
I have 2 job offers, one from a firm in DC that has been featured in Graphis, How & Print; I'd be taking on mid-level responsibilities. The other offer is from a firm here in STL, they're work isn't quite as good but there is a lot of room for opportunity. They tell me their strategy is driven by designers. Oh and I'd be considered a senior designer and paid $9,000 more. With a lower cost of living.
What should I do? Money/more responsibility/not moving vs. moving/great firm w/ proven excellence/less money????
Ah and my GF is in WI, which is only 5.5 hours away from here. ARRGGGHH!!
Rant Mar 19, 08, 10:23 a.m.
So we designed this print campaign for our biggest client. It's a 107 page book and six brochures, all of which come slipcased in a kit. Total beauty piece – gorgeous photos, intricate illustrations, good writing and typography, several different cool papers throughout. My boss and I worked super hard on this over the course of about 4 months, and I spent many late, almost sleepless nights making sure it was as close to perfect as possible. The week before the press check I worked maybe 100 hours. The printer, one of the best in the country, totally dropped the ball on this one. For some reason, the book is about a quarter inch shorter than it should be, so now it's a different size than the accompanying brochures. It now flops around in the slipcase that was engineered for an exact 6 x 9 fit, since the books are too short. This also messes up our layout. The printer also fattened the type waay too much, b/c they were concerned it wouldn't hold up on press. They forgot to fatten type on one page, and it totally looks fine. Some letters are now running into each other. The varnish appears to be tainted, since many photos now look milky, even thought they were crystal clear when we did the press check.
Grrrr...anyone else have bummer print stories like this? It's just a letdown when you work really hard on something that then gets pulled down by production mistakes.

Been in the Midwest for a few months now, missing the water very much. Being a diehard son of the East Coast I vote top five:
1. Narragansett, RI
2. Newport, RI
3. Buxton, NC
4. Chincoteague, VA
4. New Smyrna, FL

Just discovered it. I know many of you have been playing with it for a while now so it might be old news for the Builds of NT. Anyway, I'll go back to pooping myself now.
Daddy gramme! Feb 20, 08, 10:58 a.m.
Just had our first sonogram today. It's a bit early (8 weeks) but I can't keep it to myself any longer! We're super stoked.
I was amazed how clear the ultrasound picture was. We could see the head, two little arm buds and the heartbeat, which was thumping at a heathy 164 bpm. Lil' guy or girl is about the size of a Gummi bear and growing rapidly.
:D
Invitations Jul 12, 06, 8:17 a.m.
For those of you that have designed wedding invitations:
Is it considered standard procedure to have two envelopes? Like you get an envelope in the mail, open it up, there's another envelope, and the invitation is inside that?
My fiancee tells me that's standard procedure, but I don't think I've ever seen one done that way. Seems like a superfluous waste of paper even if it is 'traditional'.
opinions welcome. danke
Logotype Critique Aug 30, 08, 11:58 a.m.
OK, I swear I usually do work for people outside of the church ;)
This is for a friend's college ministry in the research triangle area of NC. It's a huge group as far as those things go.
The name of the church affiliated with the ministry is Church of The Good Shepherd. So, I thought a simple logotype would be most appropriate. I've narrowed it down to what you see here. I wanted to subtly hint at a shepherd's crook with the lowercase f, rather than try to make some gimicky shield or crest like I was asked (ugh).
I typically think containing a logotype in an oval or circle can be a cop-out, but in this case it reinforces the idea of a flock or group being unified. I'm leaning towards one direction but would appreciate some feedback first.

BEST TATTOO ARTIST May 12, 06, 8:18 a.m.
We're doing a promo for a client that involves a tattoo contest. I need to find a world-class tattoo artist to act as judge of the competition.
Links much appreciated. Thanks NT!

Scottish fonts Aug 15, 07, 8:02 a.m.
I'm designing the identity for a Presbyterian Church. The church demographic is broad, but the services are failry traditional. The church's tradition is firmly rooted in Scottish Presbyterianism.
For the logotype, I'm looking for anything with a Scottish feel; be it a Scotch Roman, or whatever. I want something that speaks of tradition without being overtly Celtic. So far two very different fonts that have the proper feel that I like are Mason and Benton Modern.
Suggestions much appreciated.
Monogram crit please Jul 13, 06, 1:48 p.m.
Working on a monogram/logotype for my wedding invitations. My last name is Steel, hers is Prouty. Feedback much appreciated on which you prefer, etc...
Wedding Pics Nov 22, 06, 7:24 a.m.
So, many of you know the story: a month ago I got married. One of my brothers married my wife's younger sister on the same day, back-to-back ceremonies. The pics are finally in! Not the best, but there are a few worthy of framing:
