What made Guided by Voices' rise from underground curios to indie superstars in the early '90s so noteworthy was that vocalist/guitarist Robert Pollard was also a teacher, an uncommon occupation for rock & roll idols. Pollard was born on October 31, 1957, in Dayton, OH. As a child, Pollard was groomed by his father to become a professional athlete, but in college he realized that music meant more to him than sports. Pollard formed Guided by Voices in Dayton in 1983 while working part-time at an elementary school. Also consisting of Paul Comstock (guitar/piano), Mitch Mitchell (bass), and Eric Payton (drums), Guided by Voices released their first EP, Forever Since Breakfast, in 1986. Pollard's love for British Invasion records, as well as an admiration for progressive rock and R.E.M.'s murky jangle, sculpted the band's early LPs, all of which Pollard, his brother, and the group's manager financed by requesting a loan from the Dayton Public Schools Credit Union.
With more than 1,300 songs registered to his name with BMI, Pollard is among the most prolific songwriters of his time. In 2006, Paste magazine listed him as the 78th greatest living songwriter

Here's 83 of his best songs

A Perfect Circle

It's on.
A Perfect Circle will play Phoenix (Marquee Theatre), Los Angeles (Avalon), Seattle (Showbox at The Market), San Francisco (The Fillmore) and Las Vegas (The Pearl) this fall. Each of the three-night stops will feature one of A Perfect Circle’s albums in its entirety (Mer de Noms, Thirteenth Step and eMOTIVe). Las Vegas (The Pearl) will be a two-night outing (Mer de Noms and Thirteenth Step).

I would definitely travel to see the first night of any of these dates and possibly the second.
The third night would be disappointing, I wasn't a fan of that covers album.

Machete

I just saw this this weekend and thought it was great! Much better than the other Grind House movies (Planet Terror/Death Proof).

Boston Spaceships

Boston Spaceships is a pop, punk and rock music band featuring Robert Pollard of Guided By Voices, John Moen (Decemberists, Perhapst), and Chris Slusarenko of Guided By Voices.
Despite recent releases from other Pollard projects (Circus Devils, The Takeovers, Cosmos), Boston Spaceships is currently Pollard's primary band.

Car Talk

It's about time to trade in our grocery getter for a new one. We currently have a BMW 323iT Sport wagon. It's an awesome car but we're looking for something with AWD.
I have my eyes on 2 Estate Wagons. A Volvo v70R which I love the exterior styling but the inside is very bland.

Or a Subaru Outback XT which the exterior is very bland but the interior is a lot more sporty than the Volvo.

Anyone have any experience with either car?

shielded speakers?

I'm pretty sick of listening to my iphone's feedback through my desk computer speakers.
Anyone use any decent shielded speakers that get rid of this annoying noise?

It seemed like a pretty cool service to stream music from to listen before you buy (or steal). I know Pitchfork and a bunch of other music blogs used it.

Nike Rips Radiohead

The music Nike uses for this new commercial sounds exactly like Radioheads National Anthem.
I'm sure Thom wouldn't give them permission to use any of his music. Do you think it's close enough for them to take action against Nike?

Beer Trends

I never heard of a Black IPA a few months ago and now it's on tap everywhere. I like it but it's a bit too strong in flavor and in alcohol.

Also I'm going to a tasting for an Oyster Stout tonight. It sounds like a disgusting mistake but I guess people have been brewing it for decades.

Anyone tried either of these styles? What other flavors are on the rise?

Eames Lounge Chair

After more than a decade of sitting in a poorly constructed flimsy Ply Craft knock off I'm seriously considering getting the real deal.
The only thing that is stopping me is a friend bought one and he said it really isn't that comfortable. Now if I'm going to spend used car money on a chair I'm going to have to sit in it everyday for the next 50 years to get my moneys worth.
Do any of you have one? Is it comfortable to you or just a piece of art or status symbol?

RIP SAAB

General Motors announced today that the intended sale of Saab Automobile AB would not be concluded. After the withdrawal of Koenigsegg Group AB last month, GM had been in discussions with Spyker Cars about its interest in acquiring Saab. During the due diligence, certain issues arose that both parties believe could not be resolved. As a result, GM will start an orderly wind-down of Saab operations.

sofaking saad!

Gadget Stores

Well it's that time of year again. Time buy and receive useless crap from friends and relatives.
Does anyone know of any cool gadget sites like Sharper Image. I swear I've been linked to one from Geekologie but I've been looking through their archives with no luck.

PS3/Netflix streaming

Just started a NETFLIX account so I can stream content through my PS3. Got the official NETFLIX disc yesterday and it seemed to work flawlessly. Only question is why do you have to insert the streaming disc every-time you want to watch something? Is this for security reasons? Seems like it should be downloadable and kept on the hard drive. Also if I get another PS3 for the bedroom can I just use this disc to stream content? What if me and the misses want to stream 2 things on 2 different TVs?
