Lulu book

I'm thinking of designing a small book to send to a list of potential clients as a teaser.

http://www.lulu.com looked pretty good, but are there better places to go? in terms of pricing, quality, whatever.

Just saw this on Facebook. Could they have picked a weirder looking dude for the photo?

Grey Gamma

If I'm converting a CMYK ad to Greyscale in Acrobat, should I use Grey Gamma 1.8, Grey Gamma 2.2 or Dot Gain? What's the difference?

Ad will be in various newspapers.

Export spreadsheet to HTML

Besides Excel (which is a complete pig by the way), is there anything else that will export a spreadsheet to HTML? I thought that Numbers might, but no-go.

InDesign and PDF overwrite

Whenever I save a PDF out of InDesign CS5 and there's a PDF with the same file name existing it gives me an error saying that PDF file is in use, and PDF can't be created, etc. Previously (using CS4), it just used to overwrite the file and go on with life.

Anybody know how to get it to stop complaining and just overwrite the PDF like it should?

What font is this?

Anybody know what font this is? I tried Trade Gothic and Frutiger Light and neither were a match.

Graphic design for children

In a conversation with my son's Grade 6 teacher, I mentioned that I was a graphic designer. She asked if I would help teach some rudimentary graphic design to her students for an art class or two. I thought about maybe leading them through designing a poster for a school event, or maybe doing a personal logo or identity of some sort. You guys have any other ideas that might be worthwhile and educational? She wanted to do it on the computer, but I'm afraid that they might be pretty limited in terms of software.

Help with website?

Sorry, I'm not the greatest at web stuff. Can someone help me? Right now my directory structure on my server is setup as follows:

> DOMAIN1
>> DOMAIN2
>>> DOMAIN2index.php
>> DOMAIN1index.php

(>>'s refer to the level in the directory tree)

How do I make it so that when I refer to "/" in HTML for DOMAIN2 it goes to the root of DOMAIN2 instead of "/" for DOMAIN1 because that's the root of the server.

Hope that was clear. If not, tell me I'm an idiot and let me know.

Sorry for the crummy file structure diagram.

Website security

Building a website for a client—which I'm hosting at (mt)— and the client's IT guy is insisting that our hosting uses AES or TLS security. Since this is all above my head... what does AES or TLS do?

I looked on the Googler but most of that was above my head as well. Can anybody tell me what this is in plain-english? Or should I just tell him to shut his mouth—that he's a paranoid IT guy—and it's secure enough as it is with (mt)?

Resell hosting in Canada

Looking for a product that will bill my clients automatically, etc and found this solution.. which I think looks pretty nice:

http://www.rackspacecloud.com/bl…

Only problem is that you have to have a US bank account to get paid from Rackspace. Anybody know of something similar that would work in Canada or with a PayPal account?

I used the "Filter" but couldn't find any substantial information.

Any of you currently doing this for clients? I basically want to just punch in their CC number (or have the client do it themselves) and sit back and collect the cash.

iTunes Genius

Well, I decided I should let iTunes find some new music for me the other day, so I turned on Genius. I have a huge collection, so I went to sleep and let it do it's thing. This is what I came back to in the morning. 558 albums... all fucked. Anybody had this issue?

File server

I'm looking for something that I can install on my web server that allows:

- uploading of a bunch of files via FTP
- creation of usernames and passwords for clients to login and download the files easily in a browser

any suggestions or things that you've tried that might fit the bill?

Thanks in advance.

BlackBerry design?

So a client has given me a job of designing an app for a BlackBerry. I can't seem to find any information anywhere regarding what controls should look like, visual standards, etc when designing an app for BB. Does anybody know? Apple is really anal about this stuff, but it doesn't seem like RIM gives a toss.

Domain broker

Anyone know of a decent place to go if you think you have a good domain name and you want to sell it?

Other than just putting a page up on the domain.

Chemistry

Hi all,

Doing a brochure for a client. The theme is Chemistry. Anybody know where I could find some cool scientific diagrams, etc? I've looked at all the usual suspects (istock, google, veer, etc) but haven't found much. I was also thinking of trying to find an old chemistry book or something too. Any suggestions or things you might know of off the top of your heads?

Thanks in advance!

Duotones

Hi All,

I'm working on a piece that's going to be printed 2 color. Pantone Black and 396. I've got a black and white image with a graphic in 396 overlaid on top so that the bkg is showing through. When I try to make this image a duotone in photoshop, it gives the whole image a tint of the 396 instead of just the area where the graphic is. Anybody know how to accomplish this? Or should I do it all in InDesign with just a monotone image and then overlay the graphic and set it to overprint in Indesign. That probably wasn't clear at all, but I'll give it a shot.

Please help!

Acrobat / InDesign

I have an InDesign file with multiple pages. I want to export every page of it as a separate PDF. Is there an automated way to do this? Or do I have to export manually each page?

Thanks in advance!
