Name Ideas Sep 29, 09, 7:38 a.m.
A good friend of mine is starting a personal fitness company. The idea is he does after business hours and weekends training. He would be setting up customized workout routines and diet plans. Also, he plans on working as a workout partner/motivator beyond a 'stand back and instruct' type trainer.
So, what should he call his business?

Thoughts? Been staring at these long enough to become numb to them. I'd appreciate a little third party input.

Hello all. Long time lurker. First time poster, blah blah....
Just about wrapping up my portfolio site, and I need some more eyes on it. Lets hear thoughts on the site, the work, wording, etc.

There are hundreds of pics of this guy on his site. Lets get this thing going.
Dealing with bad art direction. Mar 25, 09, 9:04 a.m.
I work at a studio with 2 other people. The owner/principle/creative director (a 65 year old guy) and his son, who is my art director.
Now, I generally trust the opinion of the father, although he tends to steer me toward dated looks. (He still thinks that David Carson, layered type look is cutting edge.)
His son, however, I don't trust. He never had to climb ranks, or prove himself as a designer. In fact, the job he had before he became an art director at his fathers studio was to crank out clipping paths for a toy website. He has a 4 year associates degree from a crap school.
Now, I know a lot of design is subjective (which sucks with a father-son duo, as they tend to think the same, and side with each other) but a lot of times its simple functionality things. For example, the son keeps telling me to use en-dashes where i should be using em's.
Whenever I see potential issues, I try to phrase my concern in the form of a question. ie: "Do you think this type might get hard to read?" or "Have you checked out this typography article on proper hyphenation?" so as not to be insolent, or a cocky young designer.
Other than saving versions of designs for my folio that haven't been directed into the ground, and preparing my resume/folio to find a new gig, what else can be done?
Anyone have any sage advice? Anyone Dealt with this kinda thing before? Funny stories? Call me a cunt? Anyhow, would love to hear some thoughts.

Anybodys wrist ever hurt in the evening after clickin' around creative suite and int0r-web all day?
Got a gel cushion for my wrist and an ergo-mouse, but that doesnt do too much. And the wacom tablet is obtrusive to work with type and layouts, or browse internet.
My mouse hand wrist makes clicking noises when i rotate it, and it didn't a year or two ago.
Anyone else effected? Remedies? Sarcastic comments?
.eps vs .ai Nov 2, 09, 12:41 p.m.
Anyone save their illustrator files as .ai? For making pdf's for clients and internal approval, i find it far easier to keep all my vector files as .eps.
Anyone use the .ai format? Any benefits I'm overlooking?
Scritptographer & Illustrator CS3 May 20, 09, 2:03 p.m.
So I like some of the things I can do with scriptographer, but ever since I installed it on my work computer, Illustrator has been outta control. The art-board becomes unselectable after I save, the palates are wonky, and it crashes like 3x daily. Anyone else have this experience‽

Also, check the differences between the type. Which is workin for you?

These photographs document several of the various types of mould which can be found growing on your average loaf of bread, given enough time and neglect. I am interested in the inherent contradiction of finding aesthetic beauty in something almost universally perceived as disgusting. I was also fascinated by the extraordinary structure and microscopic nature of these life forms, something that those of us not involved in the biological sciences are probably only vaguely aware of.

Power Point Templates? Apr 22, 09, 8:19 a.m.
So I've recently gotten some requests from a client for Power Point templates for them to use for presentations. This is something I know next to nothing about.
I've done a bit of research and it seems as easy as making a background image, and placing a couple text boxes over it. Is this it? Anybody have any experience with this kinda things? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Crazy Powerbook Behavior Jul 29, 09, 7:24 a.m.
My home computer is an old Powerbook g4. Its been really solid up until yesterday.
I turn it on, and it goes to a login with password screen. That login screen has never showed up, cause I never set up user accounts! WTF!
So, I boot from my install disk, and try to change the password for the admin, and (surprise surprise) it says 'no users available'. I tried repairing disk permissions and all that shit. No luck. I even tried reinstalling osx, and it gets almost all the way through the instillation process, and tells me 'installation failed, try again later'.
I have no idea whats going on. Could this just be a serious hardware problem? End of the line for the ol' pb? Anyone got any ideas?
New Street View Functionality Jun 4, 09, 7:30 a.m.
This is great. I love street view for finding places, but clicking that arrow forward took forever. This is much better.
