Invoice Template Feb 24, 12, 10:31 a.m.
Anyone have any nice examples of an invoice template suitable for 1099 hourly contract work?
Ever formed a micro agency? Jan 26, 12, 1:06 p.m.
I actually just made that term up, but was curious if any of you have partnered with anyone, perhaps a developer or a designer to take on more ambitous projects? And I'm not talking about bringing someone on to help you with a project or two. I mean taking your combined experience and portfolios and presenting yourself as an actual business entity.
I have 15 years of full-stack web development experience. That means, front end, middle layer and database experience. In addition, I have mobile development experience and have also written desktop software for the mac and pc and successfully sold those products through an ecommerce site I built from the ground up.
I also have some minimal design experience, but the point I'm trying to make is if I partnered with someone who's equally good at their trade, we could form a powerful team and undercut bigger agencies with lower bids and potentially one day build a solid company underneath us.
I'm a very 'pie-in-the-sky' type thinker at times, I'll admit, but why couldn't this be done?
Feel free to play devils advocate, or share personal experiences if you have any.
Shot people say in LA Jan 24, 12, 2:03 p.m.
if you've lived here for any amount of time, you're probably guilty of saying more than half of this...
How many of you... Dec 16, 11, 2:58 p.m.
have ever paid for advertising?
did you get a decent return on your investment? was it a substantial investment?
i'm considering this path, for a mobile project i have, but a recent article about somone's experience with admob is making me have second thoughts:

Stock Photos Nov 28, 11, 9:32 a.m.
of people that don't look like stock photos
i need some photos that look a little more candid and real-life than what you'd find on istockphoto. the kind of profile photo's you'd see on people's facebook pages. this is for commercial use so they need to be licensed.
any ideas?
The Save Icon Nov 15, 11, 7:21 a.m.
Why are we having such a hard time deviating from this legacy symbol?
Interests / Activities Nov 8, 11, 12:44 p.m.
what kinds of activities do you currently do in your free time?
if you had more free time (or money, since they're interchangeable), what other kinds of activities would you do?
center image in smaller div Nov 4, 11, 4:09 p.m.

Downtown LA Oct 17, 11, 6:55 p.m.
Heading there tomorrow night w/ a friend. Usually the Edison or the Association but Edison is closed on Tues.
Any recommendations on good places like these to go that are kinda upscale but without a line or pretentious club vibe? Open to lounges, boutique hotel bars, etc. Just wanna dress up and unwind.
ps. yelp sucks.
iPhone Web Apps and Long Dropdown Sep 16, 11, 12:30 p.m.
I can't recall ever coming across this myself, but I have a Country > State/Region > City group of dropdowns that users have to select from and the issue is the the length of the city list, which can reach well into the thousands. On the iPhone choosing a city in California, for example, that starts with the 's' takes a looooong time to scroll to get to using that weird price is right scroll wheel the iphone throws up.
Ever seen or come up with an elegant solution for something like this?
weeeeeeee.....
Divs vs. Tables for Forms Aug 27, 11, 11:45 p.m.
preface (for the tl;dr crowd): for forms created for mass consumption with complex layout and localized text, use easy-to-implement tables, or put extra effort into doing it with divs?
I don't understand a lot of the debating about the use of these two, but from what I've seen, the community seems to favor divs, and as such I try to implement them in most all situations, except when tabular data is being displayed.
Right now, however, I'm trying to set up some complex forms where I'd like the labels to all be right aligned and have the same width, but I can't use a fixed width as those labels will be localized thus requiring the need for variable widths.
One other point is that this is something that will be reused A LOT - think of it as a service consumable by the public.
So, with all that, should I put the extra effort to bend css so that I can use divs or just take the easy way out with tables? i'm asking because googling this is overwhelming and impossible to find a consensus amongst all the arguing and biased opinions.

How is this done? Aug 17, 11, 7:47 p.m.
i see what looks like a leaf shape rotated around a central point using different hue's with a lower transparency. i know how to rotate shapes in photoshop, but i don't know how to do it with each shape spaced perfectly or how to rotate from a specific point. not even sure what to google for this. anyone?
Credit Card Processing Aug 11, 11, 1:07 p.m.
What services do you guys use for taking credit card payments? Or do many of you just take PayPal payments instead?
Curious what's out there and what's popular as I've started working on a service that others could consume to take payments, but I'm wondering what's out there that my google searching hasn't turned up. thx
Graphik Index Aug 8, 11, 7:30 a.m.
First, a formal introduction to those not familar. Graphik Index is a directory of creative talent. It is open to anyone who works with any form of visual media. It is not a portfolio site, nor will it ever be such. With it's single-column vertical layout the site provides simple navigation for perusing and finding creative talent, bookmarking it, and then arriving at the final destination which is your site / krop portfolio / etc.
Added in this installation are bookmarks, a drag and drop thumbnail organizer, simple proximity searching components, and tiered accounts. Premium accounts offer higher search results, placement above ads, more images and high-res view modes. Currently, premium accounts can be obtained through referral sign-ups.
The following screenshot displays the default view when not in search mode, and also shows the views available from premium accounts.
Designer Database in 24 hours Jul 25, 11, 9:06 a.m.
I've been busy with a lot of different projects lately and have several in the queue, and have been considering teaming up with a designer. The problem is, it's hard to find you guys. What do I do, use google or sites that lists folks like you and pour through portfolio's? Ughh. What I want is to be able to just scroll through a gallery of indexed, searchable work and quickly pick a few from the list and then contact them see if their services are available.
I've actually had this idea in the back of my head for a few years now, but friday afternoon i decided to knock it out really quick. However, I'm very busy right now, so I only allotted myself
24 hours to finish the project - concept to completion. I managed to finish a little over that adding the final touches sunday morning, but I'm satisfied with the results.
Take a look at the sample accounts (content credit goes to ffffound) which will be removed shortly and feel free to add yourself as one of the first to the site:
Ok, back to work on my other projects now :)
Freelance Sites are the Devil? Jul 19, 11, 11:28 a.m.
Of course I'm talking about Elance, Guru, and the like. What are your experiences with them? I know the genereal consensus on here about how you're doing your fellow designers/developers a disservice by working for what I'm guessing is generally a very low fee. But what about in terms of leads? Are the sites useful in that respect? I've considered partnering with a designer to form a micro agency, but I honestly don't know where the leads come from.
Social Media Integration in Mobile Apps Jul 18, 11, 10:39 a.m.
Two-part questine:
1) Have any of you done anything like this? I'm talking about those facebook, twitter, google+, etc. buttons you see all over the web:
Ever added any of these to your mobile apps?
2) Have you seen this done anywhere, and have you used it?
Getting T-Shirts printed Jul 7, 11, 2:58 p.m.
I have a design I want to get printed, but I've never done this sort of thing before. So, I have a few questines..
1) How can I ensure the printer I go to will closely match the color I have on-screen with the one they use to print my shirts? I've got this funky color that's not exactly red and not exactly pink, but somewhere in between and I'm worried it won't show up correctly.
2) Do most printers take psd's or jpeg for the source image, or do I need to learn Illustrator? And if a psd/jpeg is fine, what size do I want the source image to be in pixels?
3) Any tips that might help me here?
4) How are you doing today?
