Loving Tumblr right now!!! Jan 19, 12, 8:12 a.m.

I decided to make a blog. Everyone recommend the whole Wordpress route, so I missioned and struggled till eventually I got to the point where I couldn't do any more without forking out a wad of cash.

Not a massive amount, but as I wasn't sure I was gonna use it, I was hesitant. Also, I've played with php and it's a bitch.

So off I went to Tumblr, as a friend of mine has made something pretty cool in it. For fuck sakes, you just click the "edit html" button and to can completely change everything! So much simpler and it's frikkin FREE!!

I just thought I'd share, for those of you who end up making the same decision

Travel blog site? Jan 10, 12, 3:39 a.m.

Going traveling, and plan to take a lot of photos, make cool videos etc. Don't really have time to figure out Wordpress etc and start a whole custom site, but am keen to have a blog with at least a couple of pages- ie one for photography/artsy stuff and one more for matesy fun stuff etc. Happy with something that I can just choose colours and upload my own header, no need to design all elements myself.

Recommendations?

Basically, today South African politicians will pass a bill that can put reporters in jail for up to 25 years for exposing their bullshit corruption

Politicians, particularly those in the ANC, the ruling party, are so fucking corrupt they make all this wall street shit look like your dad sneaking an extra cookie from the jar. The current president was on trial for rape and embezzlement, but just decided to cancel the trial.

The only thing slowing them down was the fact that public might know about it- the police are obviously either powerless or involved depending on how high up they are. So today, they'll put a stop to that so they can do whatever the fuck they want. Even whistleblowers can be jailed, so you can't even tweet about it ffs! I might even see good friends go to jail and will be in danger of it myself if I move back.

FUCK the ANC! Desmond Tutu has even come out saying they are worse than the apartheid govt. And for a black man who lived through it to say that, it's gotta be bad :S

This is why I'm applying for a British passport next month. Breaks my heart.

Mov isn't working as it renders completely jerky. I wanna try flv... and will most likely need to in the future... but cannot for the love of god figure out how or find a tutorial.

Has my coffee just not kicked in yet or is it genuinely not that easy despite flv being a flash format in the fucking first place?

SOMETIMES IT'S NOT BEST TO USE A COMMA- A DASH CAN LESSEN THE NEED FOR A FULLSTOP

Given a little poetic license, is this sentence ok, and where exactly would the dash go, would it be as above- letter, dash, space, letter?

I'd love to know more about the lesser evil here, as fullstops at the end of sub-headers can really mess with a layout

I want to draw on a plane like the Star Wars intro type. Can Illustrator's perspective tool help me do this? I know a more manual way, but would be super awesome to do it properly..

Pulling the vanishing points together just causes absolute mayhem, and I definitely want it as a nice symmetrical plane to work on.

I need to buy a laptop that I can edit video with.

Taking it traveling all over the world, so can't spend too much on one with absolutely everything, so I need to know which specs are the most important. I know I'll need more than 4gb ram... but, for example, would I be better off having 4gb ram and a solid state drive, or 8gb ram if they were the same price?

..and is graphics card memory more important than normal memory?

Is the difference between i5 and i7 processors worth sacrificing other things for?

Basically, any advice will go down a treat. I've set £900 as a max budget as I don't want something I'll be too worried about when in a dodgy hostel in a dodgy country

Drawing unclosed shapes Jun 20, 11, 8:24 a.m.

I want to know how you guys draw shapes that have overlaps. I have a few ways but hate them all. I'm sure one of you has a better way!

ok just to use this as an example... say you're drawing this. You get to homer's mouth-beard bit. do you:
a) Draw the whole thing as a closed shape and then add the actual mouth as a line and match it up?

b) draw the shape as an unclosed path and then use live paint to fill the colour in?

c) Draw the unclosed shape with mouth, duplicate and expand, then turn one into a filled background?

d)Have a better way of doing it?

Any good ones out there? Gotta do one, but not much of a sports fan so haven't really had what's out there shoved down my throat and really need some inspiration. Gonna go into foootball programmes but not a footie company. (it's a tickets thang)

Been doing a lot of searching, and it all I can find is shots of celebs holding razor blades with 55 titanium200 blades and a pulsating electroplasmagnetic sonic pulse ray wave ionizer... and trying desperately to look mean even though they're an overweight darts player.

animated gif hover state May 22, 11, 3:48 p.m.

I want to have a gif that just plays once as a rollover state. I've put the static version as a background image, and another background gif that plays once as the hover state.

For some reason, though it does switch the images, the gif just sits on the first frame. (not the last which would indicate that the image is cached or something)

anyone ever successfully tried this? I really want to be able to use this nice low-tech solution
