State of the web - HTML5 Apr 16, 13, 1:02 p.m.

I've been trying to understand the current state of the web at the moment, but kinda struggling and was really hoping to get some insight from the pros.

Mostly in regards to Flash alternatives, like HTML5 and jQuery etc and how you go about cross platform solutions.

Often It seems like all this tech is trying to fill the boots of Flash.
But there seems to be a massive gap where Flash once was. Usually a technology gets superseded by a better one. But in this case Flash has just been wiped off the table, with no replacement.

People look to HTML 5 but, from what i can tell HTML 5 is still so new and infantile with very little community support or information.

So there is like a big gap for rich interactive experiences, which Flash once filled. And also Flash is still more supported on desktop browsers than HTML5.

Most (pretty much all) of the rich interactive / animation stuff in HTML 5 either runs like complete crap on mobile devices or doesn't run at all.

So what the hell are people on about when they think HTML 5 is the savior of mobile browsing? Am i missing something? Obviously Flash doesn't work on apple mobile devices, and is no longer supported by adobe, so its a no go.

Which had a disappointing response, in line with my experience of mobile HTML5. I'm trying to understand the whole 'HTML5 is the future' stuff, but find it quite underwhelming.

Say for example you want to create an interactive web banner. with some very basic interaction.
- you could make it in HTML 5 and it wont IE 7 (and might not work on IE 8 iirc), and it might not work on mobile due to bad performance.
- you could make it Flash and lose mobile viewers.

I know you can make several options and put fall backs in place, but smaller clients wont want to pay for you to make the same thing x amount of times to suit different mediums. And of course the target audience (buzzword word bingo 10 points!) is hugely important in your choice.

There seems to be loads of stuff you can do with jQuery / javascript, which I think is more supported than HTML5. Why aren't people using that more for interaction and animation?

I'm interested in what you lot think about it. What choices you make in regards to the technologies and what best practices you do in your agency to meet the limitations of different mediums.

Anyone got any good examples of HTML5 that work well on mobiles.

I'm talking like animations or interactive sites, not just the odd bit of HTML5, like a slideshow.

With all this 'HTML5 is the future business' I've yet to see anything decent that actually works on mobile devices.

Dreamweaver dark theme - Mac Mar 13, 13, 6:28 a.m.

Hi all!

Has anyone successfully changed the color scheme on dreamweaver by changing the colors.xml file?

Im trying to change to a dark theme like this -

but whenever I change the file, it changes the colors but doesnt look like it should at all.
The colors are way off. Ive tried several.

I sometimes use sublime text, which is great and i love the monokai color scheme -

but i just like the ftp feature of dreamweaver among other stuff.

Im working on site that I'm very unfamiliar with, its for a client and they just asked me to take a look, its not a site I built or anything so its a bit of stab in the dark. Its built in Silverstripe CMS.

They have a search box on one page (where it works fine, no errors) and they want it on another, I found the chunk of code which is simple enough -

I thought perhaps a simple copy paste would work, pasting it onto the other page they want it on, but no luck.

I'm getting the following console errors -

Gonna get a 360 shortly, and I'm mainly getting it for ultimate marvel vs capcom 3 (fighting game) and netflix, so I was planning on getting the 4gb version as its cheaper.

But if I were to later start playing more and using it more is it easy to upgrade the hard drive? Anyone done this?

I found some guides but they all seem to be quite different and have different opinions. I've built several computers so I'm no stranger to hardware and such, but I wonder if microsoft make it difficult to do this.

illy / PDF issue Mar 19, 12, 9:38 a.m.

I'm running into a problem with a pdf.

Its just a simple text document using helvetica. So in Illustrator I convert it all to outlines and save as PDF. (smallest file size)

This way it should print and display fine on any machine regardless of the installed fonts (at least i thought so).

But people are showing me print outs where some letters (not all) are missed. Which to me doesnt make any sense. If it was a font embed issue that displayed no characters at all I could understand, but it isnt a font embed issue as its completely outlined, just shapes in a PDF.

Anyone tell me why its happening?

I'm considering getting an ipad, but have a few queries.

Firstly, is there much point in getting an ipad 2? It seems that the ipad 1 runs all the apps the ipad 2 does (albeit a little slower). Of course apple could release apps that need the extra horsepower if the ipad 2, but I don't see that happening soon.

Can it play most video formats? Like mkv, divx avi etc (i understand apple say .mp4 / mov only but ive read that it can play others with apps)

Anyone know of a good itunes alternative?

Anyone tried the flash plug ins? Like iswifter etc

Hi fellas,

I'm trying to find a TV ad for a 4x4 BMW, Ive searched x3 or x4, but not sure which it is. could be x10 for all i know.

Its driving along and the camera is locked onto it. then the screen is split into 4 different videos (split with 2 lines corner to corner).

Each video showing the bmw in the same place, but the 4 different videos show different terrain. So the back end of the car might be in snow, while the front end is in a desert etc.

The split is in the shape of an X emphasizing the x4 name.

Noobie CSS/HTML quesition Sep 23, 11, 4:45 a.m.

Hey guys!

Trying to build my first site in an attempt to learn html+css, and Ive encountered 2 problems.

1) The first is trying to set a class for my headers (that are titles to various sections).
I have within the HTML -
<h5 class="title">Showreel</h5>

And in the CSS -
#title {
*various variables - font size etc*
}

But this does nothing. I thought that was the right way to call a class. I tried '#title h{ }' too, but no luck.

2) The second problem is when setting the formatting for headers Ive used the same css settings in each header, but when i get to header7 (<h7>) it doesn't do anything.

so i have -
h4 {
margin-top:50px;
padding-bottom:20px;
color:#D2D2D2;
font-size:1em;
}

same settings for header tags 4-7. But in header tag 7 it doesn't effect anything at all.

HTML looks like this -
<h7>International</h7>
<p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet</p>

Anyone know why? Hope you geniuses can help! As I'm code noobie, small words, visual aids and a patronizing voice are optional.

This shit pisses me off.

Some douche blatantly copies a vid by Rob Chui (aka http://theronin.co.uk), whacks it on vimeo, and in true rip off fashion doesn't even mention Rob chui. On top of that he gets lots of positive comments for something he had no creative input in whatsoever.

Even the audio bites are the same. No wonder he disabled comments on vimeo, i was about to comment and expose that mofo.
